Medicine Rock Returned to Tribe
by Robert Kentta, Cultural Resources Director
Medicine Rock, a place of prayers
and good luck wishes for our people, is
again in the possession of our tribe.
Our original people of the Siletz
Band of Tillamooks wouldn’t travel
past it without leaving an offering and
that tradition was shared with and
passed on to our confederated tribes
when the Siletz Reservation was
established in 1855. After allotment and
the opening of our Siletz lands to
settlers, even the local settlers became
aware of the beliefs and practices
surrounding Medicine Rock.
A lot of water has passed the rock
since those days. Many things have
happened, including termination and
restoration of our tribal government.

Newbegin Donates Tractor/Mower
to Siletz Valley School
In April, Siletz Valley School
received a Kubota 22-horsepower, four-
wheel-drive tractor, with a 60-inch mid
mount mower and a grass catcher. This
$12,204.95 personal donation was a
contribution from Wade Newbegin.
“Mr. Peters called me when the
charter school was first opening and
asked if I’d like to come out,” says Wade.
“Mr. Peters really put his heart into
getting the school off to a good start.”
Wade says, “Between Mr. Peters
(his friend of 25 years) and the people
in the Siletz community, it was very
easy to become a part of the effort.
Everyone involved in the school has
worked so hard and showed such
commitment. I really feel this says a
lot about the future.”
Wade is an active volunteer every
Tuesday and Thursday at the school and
participated in the Siletz Tribe's Run
to the Rogue in 2003.
See a photo of Wade and the new tractor/mower on page 12.
Delores Pigsley presents a Pendleton blanket to Rob Bovett to thank him for
his efforts in returning Medicine Rock to the Siletz Tribe.
