TRIBAL PROGRAM NEWS
Help Out at
Elders Woodcut
The Natural Resources Committee
and Natural Resources Department
will sponsor an elders’ woodcut on
April 24 at the newly opened Sam
Creek firewood area.
We need lots of volunteers to help
cut, split, load, and deliver firewood for
tribal elders. Bring your chainsaws,
splitting mauls, axes, pickup trucks, and
lots of energy. Even if you don’t have any
of these, we can use the moral support!
Lunch, drinks, and snacks will be
provided. We’ll meet at the tribal admin
istration building at 7 a.m. and caravan
up to the unit. For anyone wishing to
come later, directions to the unit will be
posted on the front door of the building.
Elders wishing to receive firewood
from this event should contact Angela
Ramirez at 1-800-922-1399, ext. 1225,
or 541 -444-8225. People willing to haul
firewood to elders outside of the Siletz
area also should contact Angela and she
will pair you up with an elder in need.
Program Seeks Active Elders
for Interviews
The Title VI Program will host an
Elders Fair on May 19-21. All elders -
please look in the April edition of your
elders’ newsletter for more information
on the agenda and location.
To follow the theme set by the
Administration on Aging, we would
like to recognize our tribal elders who
are “Aging Well, Living Well’’ and need
your assistance.
Do you know a Siletz Tribal elder
who has minimal health problems, is
still active in his/her community, and
would be willing to share his/her
experiences in an interview with the
program? Please contact Angela
Ramirez at 1-800-922-1399, ext. 1225,
or 541-444-8225 to nominate this
special elder.

Firewood Available at Sam
Creek Units
Two new firewood areas, the Sam
Creek #2 and Sam Creek #3 units
located about eight miles from Siletz,
are expected to open sometime in early-
to mid-April for tribal member
firewood cutting. The available wood
will be a mixture of conifer and
hardwood located in decks at seven
landings in two recently logged units.
Permits will be required and may
be obtained at the tribal Natural
Resources office in the administration
building in Siletz from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
on weekdays once the unit is open. Maps,
directions, fire season restric-tions, and
equipment requirements also will be
available at the same location.
Permits will be issued only
to tribal members, who will
need to show their tribal ID
card and provide the license
number of the vehicle they
will use to haul the wood.
Out-of-the-Siletz-area
woodcutters can call the
number at right to have a permit mailed
to them.
Thank you to everyone who has
recommended elders so far - there’s
still time to make more recommen
dations. We have many elders who are:
Calling All
Elders!
The permits are for tribal member
woodcutting for personal use only. This
firewood may not be sold. The person
named on the permit must be present
when cutting and hauling the firewood.
Tribal members wishing to cut wood
for tribal elders must present a signed
note from the elder stating that the
individual is authorized to cut firewood
on his/her behalf. The note must include
the elder’s tribal ID number.
Permits will be good for two weeks
and will allow up to two cords of wood
to be cut on each permit. Each tribal
member is allowed up to five cords total
from these two units.
Tribal members are
encouraged to get this
firewood as soon as possible
because the unit will be
burned in either the spring or
early fall to prepare for
planting.
For more details, stop
by the Natural Resources
office or call Tribal Forester
Mike Kennedy at 1-800-922-1399,
ext. 1232, or 541-444-8232.
