This year marks the second year
that Tribal Council allocated funds to
purchase and distribute computers to
tribal member households. Last year,
1,053 computers were distributed to
tribal member households. This summer
and fall, 786 computers were distribut
ed to tribal member households and
those of guardians of tribal children.
The deadline to apply for this year’s
distribution was July 15, 2003. Many
applications were received and proc
essed, resulting in the current level of
distribution this year.
Many households already have
received and installed their computers
and are using them in a variety of ways.
Some are students attending college,
others are using their computer in their
business, and still others are using them
for fun and recreation and accessing the
Internet. There are as many uses as there
are households that own them.
Tribal staff and Tribal Council mem
bers are aware that some households
may have been excluded because of
duplicate addresses - either two or more
people applying from the same house
hold or someone having used the address
previously and then moving. Tribal Coun
cil appointed staff and council members
to develop criteria to help tribal members
in this situation apply for computers.
Additionally, remaining funds exist
to purchase an additional 200 computers
this year. Therefore, the application
process is being reopened, with addi
tional criteria for duplicate households/
addresses, to give tribal members an
opportunity to apply for these addi
tional computers. You’ll find the
application form on page 9 of this issue
of Siletz News, along with criteria for
applicable verification of address
and/or custody.

New Area Open for Firewood
In addition to the South Fork #2 fire
wood area, which has been open for some
time, two other small areas are now open
for tribal member personal use firewood
cutting. These are known as the Williams
Ridge and Sugus Hill firewood areas.
Both have a very limited amount
of maple, alder, and some fir. The good
news is that, unlike the South Fork #2
unit, these new areas are accessible by
two-wheel-drive vehicles.
January 2004
Permits are required for all firewood
cutting areas. They can be obtained
during regular office hours at the tribe’s
Natural Resources Department.
For more information, contact Mike
Kennedy, tribal forester, at 541 -444-8232
or 1-800-922-1399, ext. 232; or Tami
Miner, Natural Resources assistant, at
541-444-8227 or 1-800-922-1399,
ext. 227.
The deadline to apply for this final
round of computers is 4:30 p.m. on
Jan. 15, 2004. Applications should be
originals (faxes not accepted) and
include verification of residence. A list
of acceptable verification is included on
page 9.
