Elders Attend Nez Perce Gathering
by Kathryn Dick
Twenty-five Siletz elders traveled
to Idaho to attend the Nez Perce Elder
Honor Day in June. It was a great trip
filled with lots of fun.
The Siletz elders’ bus broke down
just as it arrived to pick up the Salem-
area elders. A big thanks to the Salem
staff, who quickly transferred luggage
and elders into the Salem office vans.
We had a nice trip to Idaho with
exciting things happening along the
way. We hadn’t realized how great
our state of Oregon was. We have nice
rest areas along our roads and
highways, not quite so in Idaho. As we
traveled, we needed a stop but there
were no rest areas to be seen, just rolling
hills everywhere.
As we were getting quite desperate,
we happened onto a porta-potty sitting
on a trailer along the side of the road.
There just happened to be enough room
for all three vans to pull over to the side
of the road.
Jack McCord III, our notorious
volunteer bus driver, jumped from the
van to check to see if it was open and
luckily it was. The elders jumped off
the vans and lined up to use the porta
potty. Such relief!
After getting back on the vans and
heading toward our destination, we
drove about two miles and finally saw
a rest area sign. Things like this always
make our trips memorable. We always
look back and get a good laugh.
After arriving in Lewiston, we
found our rooms and settled in. The
next morning, we went to the Nez
Perce Casino for Bingo Breakfast.
The afternoon was
spent at the Nez Perce
Community Center,
where we had lunch.
It was a fun trip and
we all had a very
enjoyable time with
people from the other
tribes who attended.
