Siletz Tribal Youth Coming Together: Native Style
First Annual Youth Conference a
Smashing Success
How do you measure the success
of a youth conference?
Not by the rating of the food! You
measure it by the 97 percent of the
youth who want to return next year to
participate in a conference like this. You
also measure it by looking at individual
teens who took healthy risks to be there.
“I saw kids who where shy on Friday,
present and share to the whole group on
Sunday!” stated DeAnna Pearl, the
Tobacco Prevention coordinator.
The whole group included 21 adults
and 85 Siletz Tribal youth between ages
12 and 18 who met at the Canby Grove
Conference Center in Canby, Ore., on
May 30 for a three-day conference. The
adults and youth came from all over the
Pacific Northwest to participate in this
first-ever Siletz Tribal Youth conference.
The conference included a dance,
a morning of cultural teaching,
prevention workshops, Nadosh
teaching and demonstration, story
telling, swimming, basketball, hiking,
indoor games, and crafts. The Nadosh
ceremony was rated the most-liked
activity of the conference. Six of the
