Elders Gather at the Beach
by Kathryn Dick
April 8 was the Annual Elders Circle
of Wisdom Honor Day. It was a very
successful gathering with 18 tribes and
groups from Oregon, Idaho, and
Washington taking part.
The Siletz Elders worked hard and
made the lighthouse centerpieces for the
tables. They also made sand and seashell
jars for each place setting. They looked
great and each elder got to take one
home.
Door prizes were made and
provided by the elder group, so each
guest received a gift. For the evening
dinner, we placed tribal flags at
each place setting along with a cloth-
covered exercise block. Everything was
very nice.
We had elders take part in a talent
show in the afternoon. Siletz Elders plus
elders from the Lummi Tribe and Warm
Springs took part in sharing their talents.
Walt Klamath was the emcee and also
was in charge of the flag ceremony that
got the gathering started.
The afternoon entertainment was a
group of belly dancers. Tobi Mason-
Custer, a tribal member, was one of the
dancers. During and after dinner, the
Rick Bartow Band sang and played.
There was a lot of socializing and many
people made new friends.
The Jane Archer Dancers — Jennifer Caruso, Kim Palme, Tobi Mason-Custer, and Jane
Archer — entertain the elders ly belly dancing at the gathering.
