Home and Garden Show Returns
The Sixth Annual Central Coast Home and Garden Show will take
place in the convention center at Chinook Winds on May 16-18. This is the
perfect time to develop home improvement ideas, check out the latest supplies
and materials, purchase gardening supplies, learn from experts, and get cost
estimates on projects you may be considering.
For the “do-it-yourselfer,” this show is a must. Hours are 2 p.m. to
7 p.m. on May 16; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on May 17: and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May
18. Admission is free to the public. Drawings and raffles will take place for
all the family!

Freddy Fender Brings Tex-Mex
Sound to Oregon
Don’t say you Wasted Days And
Wasted Nights by missing Freddy
Fender when his show comes to
Chinook Winds Casino on May 9-10.
At the Grammy Awards in February
2002, the award for Best Latin Pop
Album was presented to two-time
Grammy winner Baldemar Huerta,
better known to his legions of world
wide fans as Freddy Fender, for his
album La Musica de Baldemar Huerta.
This is all the more remarkable
because just a few weeks earlier, Fender
had kidney transplant surgery, receiving
a healthy kidney from his 21-year-old
daughter, Maria Huerta Garcia. Fender
is now touring the country once again.
Fender had to be blackmailed into
becoming a country star. He was so dead
set against the idea of recording Before
The Next Teardrop Falls - which became
his biggest hit and earned him a CMA
Single of the Year Award - that his pro
ducer had to coerce him into singing it.
Fender’s career includes many
country hits, including Wasted Days
And Wasted Nights, Secret Love, Vaya
Con Dios, and You ’ll Lose A Good Thing.
Born and raised in San Benito,
Texas, Fender began playing music at
age 10. A rambunctious eclectic style
emerged - polka culled from the
German settlers of Texas and the
traditional Mexican music learned at
weddings and neighborhood gatherings.
Freddy Fender
In 1975, Before The Next Teardrop
Falls shot to No. 1 on both the pop and
country Billboard charts. It’s said that
this was the first time that an artist’s first
single reached No. 1 simultaneously.
Fender was named Billboard’s Best
Male Artist of 1975.
He’s been awarded his own star on
the Hollywood Walk of Fame and, as a
member of the Tex-Mex super-group
the Texas Tornadoes, helped bring
traditionally oriented music to a whole
new audience interested in roots-rock
and progressive blues music.
The show begins at 9 p.m. on May
9 and 8 p.m. on May 10. Tickets are
$ 15-$25, depending on seat location.
