the Salem Academy of Hair Design.
We’re all proud of her and wish her
well in her new career. She begins her job
at Master Cuts on the second floor of the
Salem Center this month in Salem, Ore.

Suzanne DePoe Thompson
refereed the 1A Washington State
Girls Basketball Tournament cham­
pionship game on March 8 at the
Yakima SunDome.
She was part of the first all-Native
American crew, which saw Brewster
defeat Tonasket 59-38.
Suzanne is the daughter of Chief
William DePoe Jr. and granddaughter
of the late Chief William DePoe Sr.
She has officiated basketball for
1 1 years, working at the college
Division III level and in Cascade
Conference boys and girls games.
Suzanne also officiated the Canada
West quarterfinals in Victoria, B.C.,
in February.

Higgins Becomes Major Stockholder

Helen Higgins has become the major stockholder in America Grounding Systems,
Inc., a Toledo, Ore., manufacturing company that supplies electrical grounding
devices to the military, aerospace, aviation, marine, and other high-tech industries.
The company, founded in 1993 by her husband, Greg, is a family-owned
business that employs a number of Siletz Tribal members and is currently working
on a large contract with Mitsubishi. Greg recently turned over the controllirfg
stock to his wife, giving the company the advantage of being a Native American-
and woman-owned business.
Helen is employed by the tribe as a clerk in the Planning Department - a job
she enjoys as she takes pride in working for the advancement of her Indian heritage.

Young Jose now is 28 years old and
has a master’s degree in social work.
Jose Miguel is currently studying for
his LCSW degree (licensed clinical
social work). He works with children
in Los Angeles, Calif. He’s working
very hard and doing an excellent job.
He loves his work.

Matthew Mellor of Mohave
Valley, Ariz., were married on
Sept. 23, 2001. On Sept. 25,
2002, we gave life to our
amazing baby girl, Joelle
Fay Mellor. She weighed
8 pounds, 8 ounces.
We also would like to
send our love to our distant
relatives. We hope to come up
to visit real soon!
