It’s Happening at Chinook Winds in April ...
by Teresa Simmons
Battle at the Beach II Packs a Punch
More than 500 people attended
Battle at the Beach II on March 7.
This Olympic-style amateur boxing
event was sanctioned by USA Boxing,
the national governing body for all
amateur boxing in the U.S.
Ten bouts consisting of three or
four rounds of one or two minutes each
were held. Venues such as this help
establish youth boxing records for
consideration as Olympic contenders.
The Siletz Tribal Honor Guard and
the Dancing Again Singers opened the
proceedings, followed by Siletz Tribal
member Apples Lane singing The Star
Spangled Banner. Roger Robertson, local
radio personality, was the ring announcer.
Ring girls for the event were Chinook
Winds employees - Siletz Tribal member
Sasha Shoemake and Angie Ross.
Most of the boxers came from the
Northwest and three had fought
previously at Chinook Winds at the first
Battle at the Beach in November 2002.

and enthusiasm than is imaginable, set
the tone for the evening. It was exciting
frorp beginning to end.
The ladies match was a hard-fought
battle between Washington Golden
Glove Champ Marcy Manahan and
Molly McConnell. McConnell,
National Golden Glove Champ and
ranked No. 2 in the country, walked
away with an easy victory.
The final bout, between Jorge
Hernandez of Las Vegas and Juan
Roman of Portland, was four rounds of
400+ punches per round.
Boxing Coordinator Bill Meartz,
coach of the West Portland Boxing
Team, and Chinook Winds Event
Coordinator Martin Wheeler put
together a terrific event. Meartz serves
on several USA Boxing committees,
has been involved with numerous U.S.
Olympic boxing training camps and
was a boxing official at the 1996
Olympic Games in Atlanta.
Members of the Siletz Athletic Com
mission include Lillie Butler, Tribal
Council member and commission chair
man, Gerald Smith, and Lee Jenkins.
Smith, who is affiliated with USA Boxing
and was the team leader of the 1996
Olympic team, was a referee for several
bouts. Also attending with some of his
boxers was Tom Mustin, head coach of
the 2000 Olympic boxing team.
