Chinook Winds Staff Cleans
Up Beach
Even though the weather was less than perfect for the SOLV Beach Cleanup,
the Chinook Winds team had a large turnout. Approximately 70 warmly dressed
staff members and families took to the beach with bags in hand. Even members
of the casino’s ad agency, Cole & Weber, joined in!
Three glass floats were found in the debris. These were among the 2002
hand-blown floats that are being set out by the Lincoln City Visitor and Convention
Bureau to promote tourism. Chinook Winds employees found two floats and a
third was found by a Cole & Weber team member.
While one volunteer was walking down the beach, a man standing on the
stairs began yelling at her. He told her to pick up something behind a nearby log.
She told him that she was scared (also thought it might be something gross), and
he said, “Might be trash, might be treasure.” So, she went over and got it. Lo and
behold, it was a float!
Special thanks is extended to Data Manager Tara Benik for coordinating
Chinook Winds’ participation in the beach cleanup.
The fall cleanup will be held on Sept. 28.

Lincoln City Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors will sell annuals and herbs
to raise funds for the 2002 Ambassador Convention to be held at Chinook
Winds Casino.
Show hours are noon to 9 p.m. on May 3, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on May 4; and
10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 5. Admission is free.
With a live radio remote by KYTE, KNPT, KCRF, and KBCH and lots of
raffles, this is sure to be not only a great resource for home improvement, but
also lots of fun! The raffles include a glass float and a beautiful hand-made quilt
donated by Karen Vanderzanden being raffled by the chamber, a huge teddy bear
by the Oregon Coast Community College Foundation, a beautiful sofa by Darcie’s
Draperies, and others at various booths.
Chinook Winds invites you to enjoy legendary singer Loretta Lynn in
concert on May 10 and 11.
The first female performer to be named the Country Music Association’s
“Entertainer of the Year,” she is one of the most beloved singing artists of
modem times. The Academy of Country Music honored Lynn with 11
significant awards, including “Entertainer of the Year” and “Artist of the Decade
- 1970s,” and in 1985 she received both the American Music Awards’ and
Music City News’ “Living Legend” awards.
Lynn’s numerous No. 1 hits include some of the most controversial and
hard-hitting songs ever recorded by a female country artist, including The
Pill, One s On The Way, Don't Come Home A’Drinkin '(With Lovin ’ On Your
Mind), You Ain Y Woman Enough To Take My Man, and Coal Miner's Daughter.
Her best-selling book (also titled Coal Miner's Daughter) was made into
a movie, giving Lynn the distinction of being the first country singer with an
Oscar-winning biographical movie. She has acted on several prime time
network television programs, done guest spots, interviews, co-hosted, and
performed on television on countless occasions.
Performances are on May 10 and 11 with one show nightly at 8 p.m.

Walela with Rita Coolidge
to Perform
Enter the world of Walela, Cherokee for “hummingbird,” and be treated
to the music inspired by the singers’ Cherokee heritage that shows their
incredible ability to draw you into the experience.
Walela is made up of three singers: Rita Coolidge; her sister, Priscilla
Coolidge; and Priscilla’s daughter, Laura Satterfield. Their first album was
released on July 24, 1997.
Walela’s sound is a confluence of the different influences in their lives. In
it swirls the Coolidges’ upbringing by a Baptist minister father of Cherokee
descent, a music-teaching mother of Scottish descent, and a childhood that
began in Nashville, Tenn. From those two streams come ethereal voices
floating above gospel, folk, traditional Cherokee, contemporary sound, and
other influences.
Instantly recognizable by her strong but honeyed voice and that
shimmering raven black hair, Rita Coolidge has shared the stage with Joe
Cocker, Leon Russell, and others. She has recorded dozens of albums, won
two Grammy Awards, and is well-known for her commitment to such social
issues as teen suicide, AIDS, and homelessness.
Priscilla Coolidge was twice named best female vocalist by Billboard
Magazine. The singer/songwriter has recorded with Bob Dylan and Stephen
Stills, and written music for Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, and not
surprisingly, her sister Rita. If Satterfield is a new name to you, it’s well-
known to musicians such as Robbie Robertson, who described her voice as
“one in five million.”
Their release Cherokee Rose on the Unbearable Love album tells how
their grandmother, Laura Stewart, hid her Native American ancestry most of
her life. Then two or three years before she died, she had a dream that
transformed her silent shame into a profound cultural pride. This prompted
thé request that resulted in the birth of Walela, and the rest is musical history.
