Michael Roy Downey and Mary Jean King
Downey Reaches Employment Goal
The family of Michael Roy Downey would like to say how proud they are
of him. Michael switched from being a logger of many years to attending
college, where he carried more than a full-time student load of credits.
Even with carrying such a heavy load of course work, Michael maintained
excellent grades.
This fall, he landed the job that he had set his goal on, working at a
wastewater treatment plant in Silverton, Ore. He finally has good benefits, a
decent wage, and year-round work.
Way to go, Mike! You are an example to the rest of us. We love you!
Scholarships Available for
Students in Public Health
Students seeking careers in public
health are invited to apply for the
Laurence R. Foster Memorial
Scholarship. Application deadline is
March 1, 2002.
Scholarship applicants should be
Oregon residents seeking a career in
public health, not private practice.
Preference will be given to qualified
people working in, or graduate students
majoring
in,
public
health.
Undergraduates entering junior- or
senior-year health programs (such as
nursing, medical technology, or
physician assistant) also are eligible.
The scholarship was established in
1992 to honor the late Dr. Larry Foster,
a long-time public health leader in
Oregon. He served as deputy and then
state epidemiologist with the Oregon
Health Division from 1977 until his
death in 1992. Prior to Foster’s death,
the “Friends of Larry Foster” decided
to establish a scholarship fund in his
name. He was enthusiastic about the
idea and helped develop the scholarship
guidelines. At his request, preference for
the scholarship award will be given to
qualified minorities. If no qualified
minorities apply in a given year, then
the most needy qualified applicants will
be chosen.
Friends of Public Health partners
with the Oregon Community
Foundation and the Oregon Student
Assistance Commission on this
program. Eight scholarships, ranging
from $5,000 to $10,000, have been
awarded since July 2000.
For more information, contact the
Oregon Student Assistance Commission,
1500 Valley River Drive, Suite 100,
