Nesika lllahee Pow-Wow Coming Up
The Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians of Oregon invites you to become part
of the “Circle of Friendship” at the Nesika lllahee Pow-Wow on Aug. 10-12, 2001.
The Siletz pow-wow is one of the largest in the state and is held annually on
the second weekend of August. It’s a time to be reunited with old friends, make
new acquaintances, give thanks for all that has transpired in the previous year, and
honor tribal tradition.
The pow-wow itself is free. Vendors set up during the afternoon of Aug. 9,
allowing time for browsing before the pow-wow officially begins at 6 p.m. on
Aug. 10 with the crowning of Siletz Royalty for 2001/2002, followed by a grand
entry at 7 p.m.
Grand entries also will occur at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Aug. 11, and noon on
Aug. 12. Dance competitions follow these grand entries, with categories for adults,
teens, and children. Prizes range from $25 to $500.
A free shuttle will be available from downtown Siletz to the Pauline Ricks
Memorial Pow-Wow Grounds on Government Hill, where the pow-wow action
takes place. An endless variety of food and Native arts and crafts and jewelry will
be offered for sale .by numerous vendors surrounding the pow-wow arena
(approximately 60 vendors normally attend). The aroma of fry bread and Indian
tacos is guaranteed to tantalize you, as well as the usual hamburgers, hot dogs,
and an endless selection of delicacies.
The annual parade will begin at 10 a.m. on Aug. 11 in downtown Siletz. Pack
up grandma and the kids to see a hometown parade with nostalgic small-town
atmosphere complete with fire trucks, horses, lawn chairs, and one old lazy dog
lying on the sidewalk.
Pre-registration is available for the parade and all groups and organizations
are invited to participate. Contact Kelley Ellis or Bonnie Petersen at
1-800-922-1399 or 541-444-2532 for a registration form.

Proposed Ordinances Read at
Tribal Council Meeting
The Siletz Tribal Council, on July
21, 2001, reviewed and completed the
first reading of the proposed Siletz
Community Law Court Ordinance and
the proposed Traffic Ordinance.
The proposed Siletz Community
Law Court would be available to tribal
members to resolve their disputes with
other tribal members here instead of in
Tribal Court. First, it must be decided
whether a case is appropriate for the
Community Law Court.
Then the parties will agree on one
or more peacemaker(s), also known as
“kwxeshtuketnaga” or “go-between” in
Tututni, who must meet certain
qualifications. The kwxeshtuketnaga
will work with the parties in whatever
manner is appropriate and either help
the parties come to an agreement or
decide the matter for them. Both parties

must consent to have their matter
resolved through the Community Law
Court, agree on who will be the
peacemaker(s) or kwxeshtuketnaga, and
agree to abide by the judgment.
