Family Graduates at Same Time

Verdene Anderegg (McGuire-Simmons), who in her mid-40s (we won't
divulge) in 1995 began her college education at Tillamook Bay Community College
in Tillamook, Ore., through June 1998, where she graduated with an associate’s
degree in general studies.
With the help of a PSU Diversity Scholarship and a Siletz Tribal award,’ Verdene
relocated to Portland to enroll at Portland State University. During this same
time, her daughter, Heather Ann Anderegg, graduated from high school in
Tillamook and enrolled at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore. Verdene’s
son also relocated to Portland with his mom.
For Zack, this meant he would begin his middle school years in a completely
different town as well as school. It’s now four years later, the papers have all been
written and all the tests have been taken, and on June 17, 2001, both mother and
daughter became official college graduates at the same time Zack graduated from
middle school and prepares for his high school years ahead.
Verdene graduated with a bachelor of science degree in sociology and a minor
in women s studies. Heather graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in archeology
and a minor in French. Both women did what they set out to do and Zack did what
he had to do. The Siletz Tribe is proud of this family and its commitment toward
education. Congratulations to all of you. No matter what age, what gender, an
education is for everyone!
We would also like to congratulate Clackamas Community College graduates Michael
Fisher and Aime Williams, and Mt. Hood Community College graduate Joseph Hudson.
Madeline “Madge” L. Mason was
born on Feb. 11,1923, in Siletz, Ore., and
died of natural causes on May 29, 2001.
Madge was an assistant at the Head
Start classroom in Siletz and was loved
by all the little children. They all called
her Grandma Madge. She was a
member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
She enjoyed embroidery, playing
pinochle, beach combing, basket
weaving, and doing word search
puzzles. She was Senior Citizen of the
Year, was on the tribal Health
Committee, and was vice chairman of
the tribal elders group.
Madge married Howard in
Portland, Ore., on Dec. 2, 1943.
Survivors include her children
Howard P. Mason and Tad Mason of
Lincoln City, Ore.; Cindy Urbach of
Newport, Ore.; Monica Bessette of
Tidewater, Ore.; Sharon Mason, Todd

Mason, Tim Mason, Pamela Rilatos,
Dorene Rilatos, Tamara Morrow, Diane
Troyer, and Judy Payne, all of Siletz;
41 grandchildren and 27 great
grandchildren.
Services were held on June 1,2001,
at the Siletz Tribal Community Center.
Interment was at the Eureka Cemetery
in Newport, Ore.
Moceikis Will Lead NASU at U of O
Congratulations! Misty Moceikis, a junior in the University of Oregon’s
education program, has been voted a co-director of the Native American Student
Union for the upcoming 2001-2002 school year. Misty and Annalia Norse will be
co-directors for NASU starting this fall.
Carey Receives Reading Medal
Congratulations! Nellie Carey has received a medal for participating at Santa
Clara Elementary in the Tons of Reading program. She received her medal for reading
more than 8,(XX) minutes since the beginning of the school year. Nellie read all of the
Harry I otter books and others. She readjust over 4,000 minutes last year and hopes to
read 12,(XX) minutes next year. We all are very proud of you; keep up the good work.

Boomers Reach Baseball Playoffs
Congratulations to the 2001 Toledo High baseball team. The team took third place
in the Valeo League and for the first time in more than 20 years, advanced to the 3A
state high school baseball championships. The team included tribal members Brandon
Case, Marcus Butler, Buddy Lane, Jason Howell, Joe Lane, Head Coach Wazzy Case,
Assistant Coach Jerry Howell, and Assistant J.V. Coach Willie Metcalf.
Marcus Butler was named to the 1st Team All-League at shortstop and All
State Honorable Mention. Other special team recognition went to Buddy Lane as
best defensive outfielder, Marcus Butler as offensive player of the year, and Brandon
Case as most inspirational player.
