same way today and they are tough. In fact, in the last four years, the
lodge has been subjected to a lot of water. It has stayed but has filled three
feet with silt. Last year, though, was enough. The water came up more
than I have ever seen it. It filled the lodge with a lot of silt and took about
two cords of wood partly out of the woodshed and all the kindling we had
split up. The water did a nice job of cleaning the lodge site of all of the
debris and other things were cleared.
Well, Rick and I talked about it for awhile, at least a minute, and
decided that we would move the lodge to higher ground. If water gets to
it now, Siletz is bye-bye. We moved the lodge and in time the canopy
over the lodge and all of our up-to-code electrical work. Then we tried to
figure out a way to get the wood from the shed to the lodge. Maybe an
elevator; one was for sale but sold before I even called so that didn’t
work. The thought of moving the woodshed was not one of the
better things to think about, but it was completed in early December.
Since the lodge has been in operation, sweats have taken place every
Monday except for maybe four Mondays due to high water. These sweats
have been at 5 p.m. They originally were for staff and clients, but I lean
more to anyone who is in recovery. I don’t go to as many AA meetings as
I once did; I use the sweat lodge as my group support. It works for me.
There have been many special sweats and times that the lodge has
worked every day of the week. I often wish that we had a sign-in log like
some of the parks have to see where people have come from. People from
all over the world have come to do sweats, from Newfoundland, Alaska,
Germany, Mexico, and New Zealand, to name a few.
We have a river at our disposal if someone would like to jump in.
We have a shower and it’s about 20° colder than the weather. We have
electricity and what most people comment on is that we have dry wood.
It has been a pleasant experience and probably will continue to be.
At this time though, anyone wishing to use the lodge will have to
furnish wood. Tribal members will continue to use what we have.
Ordinances, con’t from page 20
are basic and clinical research; behavioral studies; anthropological,
archaeological, and other social science studies; educational studies; and
medical, genetic, and epidemiological studies.
Any person proposing to conduct research within tribal lands, and
to the extent allowed by other law off tribal lands but affecting the tribe
and its members, must first obtain a permit. The permit application will
be reviewed by the Clearinghouse and approval granted by the Tribal
Council. Passage of the ordinance will ensure greater tribal oversight of
research activities, as well as greater protection for the confidential
information of tribal members.
Tribal members can send comments on the proposed ordinances to
Tribal Council, PO Box 549, Siletz, OR 97380. If no comments are
received, the ordinances shall become effective Jan. 31, 2001.
Tobacco
The Tribal Council completed the first and second readings of the
proposed Tobacco Ordinance and approved the ordinance effective Dec.
15, 2000. The proposed ordinance will regulate the sale and distribution
of cigarettes and other tobacco products on trust lands. Any person wanting
to sell or distribute tobacco products on trust lands must first obtain a
license from the tribe. The proposed ordinance does not apply to
direct sales of tobacco products by the tribe, including sales at Chinook
Winds Casino.
