We thank everyone again for their
comments on the first draft of the criminal law
revisions! We had more than 50 participants
at community meetings and received input that
we can incorporate into the next draft. Please
contact project staff if you would like a copy for comment.
Big Correction - The last project article did not give a complete
list of Siletz Tribal Court judges. George Stevenson (Appellate Court)
and Mark B. Williams (Gaming Court) also are CTSI judges.
Now the project staff has started to develop the Family Welfare Code.
The tribe already has several ordinances that apply to family issues. One
objective of this project is to consolidate these existing domestic relations
provisions and eliminate gaps between them, particularly in relation to
child welfare.
In 1999, Tribal Court heard a total of 218 cases and opened a total
of 188 cases. Of the opened cases, 136 of these were garnishments and 15
were family welfare cases.
A draft of the Family Welfare Code will be ready for comments in
early 2001, so be ready to get those comments in because every tribal
member s opinion counts. If you have any questions or comments, please

Thanks from the Giving Tree

On behalf of the Giving Tree Committee, we would like to thank
some very special individuals. If it wasn’t for their help, it wouldn’t have
gone as smoothly.
Thank you Caroline Easter for documenting all the tags that were
turned in and taking care of the packages as they came in. You are the
best! Thanks to William Strong and Bruce Yarbour for letting us store all
the packages in their office. Thank you Margo Hudson and Alison Noble
for helping Patricia Puma, LaRita Lundy, and myself fill the food baskets.
Thanks to USDA for letting us store all the food there and to James
Caba for moving pallets for us to put the food baskets on. Also, thanks to
Carol Blomstrom for filling in for us when we couldn’t be at the warehouse.
You are marvelous! We also would like to thank Willie Metcalf for stepping
in at the last minute to help us rush the packages over to USDA to be
distributed! Thanks to Danelle Smith, Harold Warren, and Vai Hibdon for
helping do the last of our deliveries. You were our saviors!
A huge thanks to Chinook Winds for donating $801, Little Chief
for the $50 donation, and the $90 donation from the casino’s Youth Fund
given to us by Shelley Loop. A big thanks to Head Start, ICW, and TANF
for finding the families for us! You guys are the greatest!
Through all of these team efforts, we were able to help 27 families
and 71 children. To us, this is what Christmas is all about. We have some
wonderful, caring individuals out there. You know who you are!
From the bottom of our hearts and the families, thank you sooo
much. We hope you had a great holiday. If we have forgotten to mention
anyone, it was purely accidental. We thank all who helped.
