Siletz Indian Housing Authority News
by Tammy Wagner
The Siletz Indian Housing Authority has
been as busy as ever. Several projects were
going on during the month, including the first
edition of the SIHA newsletter, “Naach’it’ ‘a”
(which means chitchat in the Tolowa
language). A drug elimination grant
application, lots of activities with the
resident’s organization, and lots of clients
to serve made for busy days.
The first edition of the Siletz Indian
Housing Authority newsletter was a
success. It took a little longer than planned
to complete and mail on June 26, but we
were all happy with the final outcome. We’ve
received a lot of good comments on it. We
hope to get more comments from all who
received it. Please let us know what you are
interested in.
Drug Elimination Grant
Norm Counts wrote and sent off a drug
elimination grant. Good job, Norm! If we
receive the $63,000 grant, the money will
be used for surveillance equipment and for
urine analysis (UAs) when someone is
convicted in Tribal Court and UAs are
ordered as part of the probation
requirements.
Update on the Dickinson
Property
The tour at Modern Building Systems
was a lot of fun. Terry Fisher, Benny Marzan,
Sheryl Simmons, her daughter Shyla,
Howard Roy, and I attended. Homes were
in every phase of the assembly line. A few
were almost complete;4missing-only
cabinets and doors. It was interesting to see
how they turned piles of wood into a house.
The first homes were delivered in mid
July. A lot of work has to be done once the
homes arrive. They will be delivered three
per week until all 20 homes have arrived. If
everything goes as scheduled, the homes
will be ready for move-in in September. The
selection for these homes was approved at
the Board of Commissioners meeting in July.
Section 8/Welfare to Work
Voucher Programs
A waiting list currently exists for
Section 8. Patricia Puma estimated it would
take one or two years to be served once
you are placed on the waiting list. Welfare to
Work vouchers are available if you meet the
eligibility guidelines. Call Patricia to find out
if you are eligible.
Home Improvement
Program
The HIP Program received $5,000 for
the Elder’s Emergency Repair Fund from the
Ad-Hoc Charitable Donation Committee.
Tammy Wagner accepted the check at the
fifth anniversary celebration at Chinook
Winds Casino in June.
Thank you so much for your donation!
Because of this, we were able to raise the
maximum for each emergency to $500.
Since we started the Elder’s Emergency
Repair fund, we have been able to fund
emergency repairs for eight elders.
We have been working on the food
booth for the Nesika lllahee Pow-Wow. We
need volunteers to help cook chicken and
serve dinner. All proceeds will go to the
Elder’s Emergency Repair Fund.
The bike raffle also has begun. Caroline
Easter already has sold $90 worth of tickets.
Stop by the reception desk at the Siletz Tribal
administration building and buy yours now.
We will raffle the bikes off at the pow-wow
on Aug. 13. They are unisex 21-speed
Mongoose mountain bikes equipped with air
shocks on the front, rear, and on the seat.
They currently are on display at the Siletz
Tribal administration building and will be at
the pow-wow. All proceeds will go to the
Elder’s Emergency Repair Fund. You need
not be present to win.
Colby Retheford
such a success that it has been extended
to Aug. 10. A trip to another place also is
being planned.
In August, a basketball tournament and
dentalium necklace making with elders are
in the works. The next resident’s
organization meeting is scheduled for
Aug. 10. The meetings are always on the
second Thursday of the month.
The resident’s organization also would
like to congratulate Colby Retheford for
winning third place in the Amerind safety
poster contest. The winners of this contest
will be sent to the national contest. Way to
go, Colby!
