    TRIBAL PROGRAM NEWS
Calling All Elders
Deadlines Near for
Financial Aid
by Marci Garrett
Elders Mini-Bus - The elders now
own a brand new 14-passenger mini-bus. It
has a diesel engine, automatic lift, AM/FM
radio/cassette, and lots more.
Monthly Shopping - Once a month
from each tribal office, we will provide
transportation to a shopping center that
offers grocery shopping, a variety store, and
hair salon. Dates haven’t been determined
yet and will be decided upon by each area.
Salem, Eugene/Springfield, and Portland
elders can call the nearest area office
supervisor to sign up. Siletz elders can call
Marci to sign up.
Transportation - If you need
transportation to appointments such as
energy assistance, housing, social security,
or others of this nature, call your local area
office for details.
Siletz Area Eiders - I’ve had lots of
requests to organize a gathering for elders
who live in the Siletz area. Let’s meet on May
11 at noon in the SIH A conference room. At
the meeting, you can decide how often you
would like to get together and establish times
and dates. We’ll have a potluck lunch, so
bring your favorite dish. Call Marci to RSVP.
Concert Tickets - These are available
at Chinook Winds for tribal elders. Call
1 -888-244-6665 and ask for the “box office.”
Tell the box office you are a tribal elder and
would like “comp tickets.” They will ask for
your name, phone number, concert you
wish to attend, and the time.
You can get up to two tickets if they
are available. When you pick up your tickets,
you will need to sign for them. Remember
that the sooner you call, the better chance
you have of getting the tickets you want.
Transportation is provided for some shows.
Please call Marci at 541-444-8261 or
1 -800-922-1399, ext. 261, in advance to find
out if transportation is available for the show
you plan to attend.

Deadline for higher education
applications is June 30, 2000, to be
considered for fall 2000 funding. This applies
to new and returning students.
It’s still not too late to file for financial
aid. New and returning students need to
complete the application and include a
financial aid award letter with the application.
A financial aid award letter is a letter from
the financial aid office where you have
applied to go to school. It shows the budget,
student contribution, and any grants or
scholarships for which the student
is eligible.
Sherman Alexie to
Speak at PSU
Sherman Alexie will make a
presentation and lead a discussion group
on May 19 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Portland
State University in Portland, Ore. His
presentation is part of the First American
Education Series offered through the School
of Extended Studies through PSU.
Alexie’s collection of short stories,
“The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in
Heaven,” served as a basis for the film
“Smoke Signals.”
At Alexie’s request, admission to his
presentation is two cans of food that will be
donated to the Native American
Rehabilitation Association of the Northwest,
Inc. (NARA). This will waive the $45 tuition.
Anyone from the Siletz area
interested in attending should contact Kelly
Strickler at 1-800-922-1399, ext. 237, or
