Siletz Tribe Makes
Charitable
Contributions
The Confederated Tribes of Siletz
Indians awarded more than $31,000 to 15
organizations in February.
The ceremony, which took place at
Chinook Winds Casino, was the first of four
donation ceremonies scheduled for this year.
Monies are derived from a percentage of the
net profits realized by the tribe through
revenues
generated
by
Chinook
Winds Casino.
The Siletz Tribe’s compact with the state
of Oregon provides that the tribe donate a
portion of its gaming revenues to charity. The
Tribal Council, however, decided four years
before the compact was negotiated that a
percentage of gaming revenues should be
allocated for charitable purposes. The tribe’s
charitable giving concept was an integral
part of its Plan for the Uses of Gaming
Revenues adopted by tribal resolution
in 1995.
Among the organizations receiving
cash donations were Portland State
University Foundation, Siletz Cultural
Heritage Committee, Oregon Websites and
Watersheds Project Inc., Lincoln County
School District, Siletz Hatchery Project,
North Lincoln Hospital Child Development
Center, Siletz Tribal Head Start, Toledo High
School track team, Siletz Royalty Court,
Toledo High School basketball team, Toledo
Sports Complex Committee, and Paul
Washington VFW Post 732.
Requests that are reviewed by an ad-
hoc committee must meet certain criteria to
be considered for the grants (see page 14).
Although the tribe has been making
charitable contributions all along, the
implementation of this plan was based on
revenues generated in 1998.
