Census 2000 Day is
April 1
by Lisa Norton
Maybe you’ve seen it already.
Maybe your friendly Census Bureau
representative has even visited you! In either
case, April 1 marks the official start of the
Census 2000 campaign. We’ve been
featuring articles on this important event for
months now, but the time to be counted is
actually here!
Remember, all information provided
on the census form is confidential and cannot
be released to any agency or department
(including the BIA, SIHA, HIP, welfare, or
Social Security). It is important that you fill
out the questionnaire and return it. The
information you provide will help determine
future funding for important projects such
as schools,
and
help delineate
congressional districts. This is big stuff and
they need our help!
Here are some important tips to keep
in mind when completing your census form.
The tribal member should be head of
household. This will ensure that your
household is listed as an Indian household.
When asked to list the name of your tribe,
please list “Confederated Tribes of Siletz” or
“Siletz Tribe.” Also, please be sure to include
everyone in your household, even if they
are living with you temporarily. Everyone
needs to be counted!

NATIVE CENSUS 2000
it Count!
Tribe Contributes to County Coffers
The Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians has contributed nearly $1 million to Lincoln
County in the past 20 years.
Tribal Chairman Delores Pigsley added $60,058 to the total when she gave a check
to Lincoln County Commissioner Karen Gerttula at a Tribal Council meeting in February
(photo above). This brought the tribe’s total contributions since 1980 to $973,785. The
money goes into the county’s general fund.
This year’s donation represents 5 percent of net timber receipts for 1999.
