TRIBAL PROGRAM NEWS
Youth Services and
Prevention Program
Open Gym
Open gym is now held every
week, on Friday from 8:30 -10 p.m. and
on Sunday from 4 - 6 p.m. There are
games, cards, coloring books, bead
activities, other sports activities, and
basketball. We encourage parents to
attend. Water is provided, as the water
in the gym is not too tasty. If you have
suggestions or ideas for awesome
games, please give us a call.
We’ve started a special part of the
program. With support from the
community and tribal programs, we have
gift certificates to raffle off to youth who
attend open gym. Here’s how it works:
Open gym has an educational
focus, which is a half-page sheet of info
that youth read and 2-3 questions that
they answer. Each time they read and
complete the page, they gef a ticket.
Plus, if they bring a parent with them, they
get an extra ticket. You can get an extra
extra ticket if you perform service to your
community. This means helping an elder
(this has to be volunteer, not paid work),
assisting with a community function, or
just something that’s a really cool idea.
We hold a drawing for prizes once (one
time) a week. You must be present to win
and you must have your ticket to win.
Don’t fear, if we draw your ticket and
you’re not there, we just throw it back in.
We plan to add one more night
per week, most likely in the middle of the
week around 6-7 p.m. We hope to
combine open gym with the regalia class
at that time. In the meantime, please feel
free to bring any projects you’re working
on and join the fun!
Please contact the prevention
coordinator if you would like to start an
open gym prevention activity in your
area. Any other questions or
suggestions? Call Lisa Brown,
prevention coordinator, at 541-444-8333
or 1-800-922-1399, ext. 333.
Thank You
A special thank you to the
following local businesses - B & B Mini
Mart, Hair It Is, Little Chief Restaurant,
Noel’s Market, Original Bard Beads,
and Sweet River Corner - for their
4
generous donations. Noel’s donated $25
worth of items for door prizes for the New
Year’s Eve open gym. All the others
donated the gift certificates that we use
as incentive prizes for open gym. The
generous support of local businesses
makes our community strong and
healthy. Thanks for showing your
commitment to Prevention in the
Siletz community.

Apply Now for Financial Aid
Deadlines for higher education/AVT grant applications are as follows:
Fall term - June 30, 2000
Winter term - Oct. 31,2000
Please take note of these deadlines and dates. The Education Department
will adhere to these dates in considering new applications for scholarships.
Returning students take note that to be considered for fall funding, you need
to complete a new application and financial aid award by June 30, 2000.
New students and returning students need to file their financial aid
applications as soon as possible. This gives them the best chance of being eligible
for grants and getting their financial aid reports processed way before the
June 30 deadline.
A financial aid workshop is scheduled for Feb. 10, 2000, from 6:30 to 8:30
p.m. to assist parents and students in filing for financial aid. Additional scholarship
information will be available.
If you have any questions regarding these workshops or financial aid
information, please contact Kelly Strickler at 541-444-8237 or
1-800-922-1399, ext. 237.
