Being deeply loved by someone
gives you strength; while loving
someone deeply gives you courage.
Every day I’m away, you give me the
courage to find that strength.
I hope your 1st birthday is as
wonderful and as special as you are.

Heather R. Walker joined the
Army in September and graduated from
boot camp on Nov. 23,1999.
I flew to Atlanta on Nov. 20 and
then drove to Fort Jackson, S.C.
Monday (Nov. 22) was parents day. We
met our soldier at the Community
Activities Center. All the soldiers filed in
and sat in the top bleachers. Parents,
aunts, and uncles sat closer to the
main floor.
On Nov. 23, the weather was
sunny and beautiful. Graduation
ceremonies were held at Hilton Field.
Heather graduated from Bravo
Company, one of five platoons and one
of the toughest. She introduced me to
her captain (Capt. Paull, in photo with
Heather), who said Heather was the best
female recruit he had ever worked with.
He would like her to go on to school to
be an officer.
Heather is a born leader. She
helped other recruits accomplish their
training. The Army made a video of their
training and also taped the graduation
ceremonies. The boot camp training was
very thorough. They learned how to take
apart and reassemble an M16 , identify
and use different types of grenades, and
survive gas warfare.
They did many exercises to get
into top physical condition. They are not
allowed any food, candy, soft drinks or
tobacco. One of Heather’s cousins sent
her a stick of gum. She said it was
contraband and she had to report it to
the drill sergeant. He gave her
permission to keep the one stick of gum.
She was very happy about that and said
the other members of her platoon
wanted her to split it eight ways.
On Nov. 24, the U.S. Army gave a
three-day pass to soldiers who had
parents there. The other soldiers had to
remain on base. Heather and I went to
the movies, out to dinner, and looked
around the countryside. I probably will
never see that part of the United
States again.
To all the parents who have
children going into the service, I would
say be there when they graduate from
boot camp. Our children need our time
and attention.
Heather - we are all proud of you.
