PSU Develops Tribal Administration Program
In order to increase access to
higher education and provide tools for
running tribal governments and other
tribal enterprises, the Division of Public
Administration in the Mark O. Hatfield
School of Government at Portland State
University is now developing a distance
learning program focused on courses in
tribal administration. The Tribal
Administration Program (TAP) is
designed for students who are working
in, or are planning to work in, tribal
government.
When TAP is fully implemented,
students located at reservations
statewide will be able to take courses
specifically designed to assist them in
their work with tribal communities,
governments and economic enterprises.
Coursework will focus on core
competencies and skills in public
administration, as well as specialty
courses in tribal law, federal Indian
policy, and other issues related to tribal
administration.
Students will be able to take
courses on their reservations or at
nearby educational institutions using
technologies
such
as
video
conferencing and the Internet. Person-
to-person interaction and class seminars
will be encouraged via in-person
meetings, two-way video conferencing,
and online discussions. Program faculty
and staff also will assist students via
telephone, fax, e-mail and on-
reservation visits.
