It’s almost FLU SEASON!! By Cathy Rasmussen, RN Community Health Director Influenza can make people of all ages ill. Although most people are ill for only a few days, some develop much more serious illness and may require hospitalization. Thousands of people die each year from flu-related illnesses. Most of these deaths occur in the elderly. Many people wonder whether or not they should receive a flu shot. Here are answers to some common questions about flu shots. Do flu shots really work? Yes. The vaccine makes you up to 80% less likely to get the flu. Even if you do get the flu, your symptoms will be much less severe. Who should get a flu shot? It’s a good idea to get a flu shot if you: - Are over age 65. - Have a chronic lung disease (asthma, emphysema). - Have diabetes, heart or kidney disease, or severe anemia. - suffer from cancer or poor immunity. - Are likely to be exposed to the flu virus. - Don’t want to get the flu. Is it OK to get a shot if I have a cold? Yes, unless you have a fever too. Can a flu shot give me the flu? No. The vaccine contains only part of the virus, and cannot actually cause the flu. Muscle tenderness and joint aches for 1 -2 days after the injection do affect some people. Tylenol can help these symptoms. How long does a flu shot last? The vaccine begins to protect you after 1 to 2 weeks and provides protection for up to a year. The flu shot you receive this year is designed to protect you from the specific flu strains expected to be common this season. To protect yourself from next year’s strains, you need another vaccine next fall. Influenza is most common between December and April, so it’s best to get the vaccine in the fall. Children under age 9 may need a second shot one month after the first. FLU VACCINATION SCHEDULE SILETZ COMMUNITY HEALTH CLINIC 10-11 am and 3-4 pm Mon, Wed, Thur, Fri.
