BY CONNIE HOFFMAN SIHA Executive Director Tribal Members interested in serving on the Housing Authority Board of Commissioners may apply for appointment to one of two terms which expire in June. The seven-member board is the governing body of the Siletz Indian Housing Authority (SIHA). SIHA is responsible for the development and management of the Tribe's housing projects and for overseeing the activities which will be funded by the new Native American Housing Assistance and Self- Determination Act (NAHASDA). The board meets in regular session once each month and depending on business, may also meet in special sessions. Much of the board's time is spent dealing with issues involving the residents o f the Mutual Help and rental housing areas. SIHA also administers a Section 8 rental assistance program which assists Tribal member households throughout the 11-county service area. This is one of the most challenging and rewarding assignments within the Tribe. Board members are often faced with difficult decisions, which affect the lives of Tribal member families. They also play an important part in meeting one of the most basic human needs—that of shelter. Persons interested in serving on the board should apply by letter to Margo Norton, Tribal Council Secretary.
