Siletz News matters. All of this hatred between tribal members is not going to get us any where. Our people have worked too hard these past twenty years to have it all destroyed by some small, petty differences. If you can only open your eyes to see that if we continue to go on this way we will only bum down the bridges that we have worked so desperately to build, and we will only weaken as a group. I can only hope that any future issues can be dealt with in a more-positive manner. Before things get out o f control and we forget what is important, which is building a stronger tribe and community. Remember, our goals are the same but to achieve them we must be willing to work together, not against one another. H eidi W ilson A concerned but proud Siletz tribal member C h a ir involvem ent im p o rta n t to trib e I would like to say to Lillie Butler, that you did a good job. We needed a Chairperson that was involved with the tribe. The chairperson of council Editorial Page As for the General Manager's, job, I hope that this job is advertised nationwide, we need someone with an advanced degree in business. As for the newsletter position, it to needs to be advertised nation wide. We need someone that has a degree in journalism and experi ence in desktop publishing. There is too much hate and nepotism involved with these two positions, and as long as tribal members are getting them, there will be nothing but problems. I hope that the new Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson will not let the hate continue that went on by the former chairperson and the clan that is trying to take over our tribe and start doing something for our people. I would like to remind her that my grandmother lied and got the former chairperson's family on our tribal roll. We were once a non-profit organization, now we need to become a profitable, money-making organization. Our tribal council should have learned a valuable lesson with STEEX2O and hope that will never happen again. inyplved . ¡with . the It w asn't that STEDCO was a people. I Was glad that you’Were at our tribal Administration Building to see that everything was going accordingly. There was a lot of abuse going on, whether it was coming in late, leaving early, not doing anything or supervisors that would not communicate with their staff, we needed change. Well! This came to an end and the supervisors .were put in their place. Some staff did not want to change, this is why some staff were angry. I would like some of them to get jobs elsewhere, and see just how long that they would last. A good example of lack of communication was (the) social worker/counselor: sometimes the supervisor would shut off a client and would not tell the social worker and then these people would not get their GA checks. They would call their counselor and complain and be verbally abusive, but it was the supervisor that shut them off. As for the casino, I would like to see more accountability. At year's end 1996, the tribe wrote off accounts receivable from the casino of $500,000.00 because they (casino) could not repay their debt to our tribe. failure; itwas-thepeople thatwere involved that made it a failure: no one had to account for the money that was being put out for them, and no! one cared; not even the chairperson of the cOhncil. I remember one person that worked at STEDCO; he' would become angry and mad and talk how STEDCO was. He eventually quit, he said he would not be part of it. should be W illiam Stanley Strong D isputed p ro p e rty regained I would like to thank tribal council for greatly improving the living conditions, safely and well being at the Gladys Muschamp residence. The regained driveway, parking and garden area that has been such a senseless controversy make it a complete home again. A home that the tribe can be profoundly proud of. This home was part of the first small group of homes built by the tribe for our elders. To fight and struggle for it to be anything less (no drive way) was ridiculous and thoughtless. Special thank-you goes to tribal elders who voiced their concern with this situation, your support was an inspiration and will always be remembered. Thank you all very much. The opposition of my concern is not worthy of my comment. The unnecessary spend ing, poor leadership and total lack of concern says it all. You might tell Tuffy Brown Log. Co. that somewhere in the future the tribe is going to have a real service station that the boys can park at and hopefully spend some money. Wouldn't that be a welcome switch. A short message for a few of you who no longer speak or wish to be friends. Thanks for getting my gist, of the situation. I didn't get involved to cause trouble, make enemies or end friendships. I got involved because simply it was the right thing to do. Why did it take tribal council so long to do the right thing? The very same and simple property exchange now in progress could have and should have taken place in August of 97. Reg. T/C minutes page 2 in the September meeting. Sep. 97 Reg. T/C minutes page 2, Serious and genuine concerns of safety were totally ignored and not even responded to. It's in black and white on page two of both meetings, read the minutes. Since you can't see your self doing the same, for a totally innocent loved ohè, I'll gladly n o t be your friend. I will end my message to you with wishes of health, wealth and a simple and very polite good-bye and good riddance. Thanks for all of the memories. Another plea to ball players, especially reputable hard bailers. Keep ÿouf vote ready. We need to get back into the growth mode. Respectfully, W oody M uscham p R oll# 686 Page7 But, let's put this in perspective. These Tribal Council members should never have been put into that situation!! Because certain people in this tribe would not, or could not, accept the will of the people in the last election, this so-called recall election was called. The members of the Tribal Council who were recalled never said the recall election could not happen. We recognized the right given to the general council by the constitution to hold a recall election. But, at the same time, we only asked that it be done in a fair and unbiased manner. This was not done. This is not my opinion, this is the opinion of the Siletz Tribal Court. So, when you hear the rumor (I am under no illusions that you won't) about how much money was spent on this so-called recall election, on paying attorneys, on paying judges and court costs, on paying travel time and per diem, on paying mileage and wages for all concerned - put the blame where it belongs!! The same people now starting the rumors are those same people who, ' because they could, not fegato the control and power of this tribe they need and want, are again trying to usurp the right of thè general council. That right given by the constitution of this tribe. The right to elect those whom they would choose to lead them! Thank you vëiÿ mùçh/l a m ., C.W. Case, Sr. Siletz Tribal Council Secretary-Treasurer Roll #183 Recall election an unnecessary cost to trib e By now, almost everybody in the Siletz tribe knows about the recent recall election fiasco Thousands of tribal dollars were spent to ensure that a fair due process w ill be given to every member of this tribe, even members of our Tribal Council. It seems some people feel that a person gives up all of his or her tribal and civil rights once they are elected to Tribal Council. Yes, by now I am sure there is a rumor being spread about how certain Tribal Council members have spent many of our tribal dollars on lawyers that were hired to defend them and their rights!! This is true. 1 will not deny that. Siletz News Deadline If you wish to submit articles or photos to be printed in the Siletz News, please submit them on or before the 15th of each month.
