Siletz News Programs Page 17 Athapascan Language Program needs storytellers and you! LAVONNE BUTLER Language Project Coordinator I want to thank all of the tribal members who responded to the article printed in the Siletz News last . month regarding the Athapascan Language Project. We requested volunteers for Master Apprentices, a Scriptwriter, and Actors. We need more volunteers. I know there are many more of you who are interested in being a part of the project, but you haven't picked up the telephone yet. We áre calling out to all of our tribal procrastinators, G iv e u s a call! We want this video produc tion to be a great success. The Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians has been known to be the forerunner in many instances, and our home-study course is another first. We do not know of another tribe that has tackled such a project. We foresee other tribes using our ideas in order to restore and preserve their native languages. Storytellers_________________ legends of our past. Many of these stories are, in our. archives. We are looking for people whose storytelling provide vivid imagery of the characters- and actions being portrayed in the Story. The storytellers Will be recounting our stories in English. They will be telling the stories in different settings, but always in front of a camera. We have all been waiting a long time to learn our native language. I have included a copy o f the orthography so that you can become familiar with the, sounds and the letters of the Athapascan alphabet. This is for you to have I failed to mention in the last article that we also need Story tellers. Each unit will include a story from our area. We need Native Storytellers who will recount on until the video production’ is out. Some of the sounds in our language are not found in the American alphabet. We will work on those sounds at a later date. fun with and something to work Aa father 'ak'chu (fog) Aw/aw out gaw (swan) Ay/ay tie wayftfsh : (he gives), \ Bb bat baashu'k (bread) Ch/ch chrun chtfn (stick) Dd dog Du (no) f Ee met teene (road) Ff fit 'Eshfvid (Ashford) Gg gone gan'gtfn (ladder) Gh/gh Hh home hat (there) Ii see biisa'k (silver) Ii kit dFtTa (where) Pg g (again) Kk kite naaka (sea bass) Kx/kx LI meekx'e (through it) LI long lat (seaweed) Han (many) Mm moss mun (for it) Nn new ni/n (you) oy oil mqyxu (edge of) PP pfey ; niipash (cheek) Ss say stfn' (meat) Sh/sh shut shtfm't (tries to) Sr/sr shrew sriina (high) Tt to teela (whale) Ts/ts gets ts'um (needle) Uu rude chiischu (elk) Ud cup naastft (beach) Ww way waadtfn (beside) Xx Yy yet yaai' (louse) (') glottal stop ta' (father) xan' (fast) Jf ghiine (them) B nasalized vowels ESP service changes TONI QUINCY ESP Program Director Employment Services Program: TANF - GA - WEX - CRT - DP For anyone requiring ESP services, please note the following changes that will be taking place: Office Hours____________________ 8:00 AM through 4:30 PM Tribal Services Specialist and Intake Appointments____________ Monday through Thursday My son, Lee Raymond Ruff, age 16, a student at Chemawa Indian School and a tribal member, completed his first mural project. When Lee came to Chemawa, he realized the Siletz Tribe was not represented in the existing murals. He proved to his art teacher, Mr. Bailey, that he could draw, and this was the result. This mural can be viewed on the wall, outside of the computer lab. "Way to go, Lee! We are proud of you!" -]\Z[orv\ (Anita Espino) GA Checks_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ As of April 1,1998, checks will be given out in one lump sum at the first of the month, instead of twice monthly. Appointments___________________ Due to an increase in service needs, we will be implementing a policy of appointment preference. Meaning, if you have, previously made an appointment, you will be seen before a person who might just walk into the office. Please call Joella Strong (in Siletz), to make an appointment for general intake. If you already have a Tribal Services Specialist,, please call them and set up an appointment time for when you need to see them. When you come in for your appointment, please check in with Shelley Upchurch. This is to insure you will not be waiting in a line for help. Reminder: If you are a walk-in, we cannot guarantee that someone will be able to help you that day
