S ile t z N e w s Employment Opportunities POSITION OPENING Position Title: Location: Supervisor: Salary/Wage: M edical Social Worker (.5 FTE) Siletz, Oregon Clinical Director 17.46 per hour Introduction: The Medical Social worker provides intensive social work services, consultation, and support of the Siletz Community Health Clinic (SCHC) and other Tribal health care programs. M inimum Requirem ents: Masters degree in Social Work with 3-5 years medical and/or clinical social work. Knowledge of interviewing and counseling techniques. Knowledge of physiological, psychological, behavioral, and social variables of alcoholism and other substance abuse. Knowledge of current theories and practices in the area of treatment, prevention, aftercare therapy regarding alcoholism and substance abuse including current research in Children of Alcoholics concepts. Demonstrated skill in counseling and relating to persons with substance abuse problems and their families. Knowledge of human growth and development psychodynamics and therapeutic techniques gained through formal and informal training. Ability to form an appropriate group, including group leadership, group dynamics, groups therapeutic process, family dynamics, and family therapy. Knowledge of psychotropic medications. Ability to interpret community culture, values, and structure. Knowledge of dynamics of mental health consultation. M ajor Duties: Provides counseling and follow-up services to patients, individual or group, to include supportive therapy, family or group therapy, assists in referral to other resources when needed. Primary services with female clients. May be expected to meet with some male clients and participate in co -ed activity. Works closely with SCHC medical staff in interpreting and coordinating services to m eet patient needs. Collaborates with and provides consultation to the CTSI Community Health Department (CHD), mental health, church, educational, law enforcement, and other community organizations and individuals in promoting mental health and alcoholism prevention treatment, and aftercare program activities through individual and group meetings, training and other informational sessions. Identifies and coordinates developmental and training needs for staff as needed. Participates in the training of CTSI-CHD mental health workers and Alcohol and Drug staff, as well as all SCHC staff. Participates in local training programs for SCHC and CTSI-CHD staff and tribal projects as requested. Training may cover stress reduction, suicide prevention, parenting, the disease concept of chemical dependency, treatment recovery process, prevention orientation, methods of treatment, youth and family issues, orientation to crisis intervention techniques, principles of patient confidentiality and other needs of staff and the community. OPENING DATE: 3/23/98 CLOSING DATE: 4/3/98 POSITION OPENING Position Title: Supervisor: Location: Salary: Community H ealth Advocate I Community Health Director/Area Office Supervisor CTSI, Portland Area Office, Portland, Oregon $19,807 annually Minimum Requirements: High School Diploma or equivalent, and one year of health-related coursewprk or experience working with the public in a health or social service related field. Basic understanding of healthcare systems and payment mechanisms utilized by Siletz tribal members, including Contract Health Care, Oregon Health Plan, and IHS medical facilities. Knowledge of local, private, and county healthcare service systems and individual medical providers. Knowledge o f basic preventive health practices in the areas of nutrition, tobacco, alcohol, and drug use, physical activity, communicable disease, maternal-child health, and routine health screenings. An understanding of disease and illness, and skill sufficient to teach clients, and to impress upon them and their family members the necessity to continue the procedures of proper health care. Willingness to model preventive health practices during work hours. Current CPR and First Aid Certification (provided upon employment). Valid Oregon Driver's License, liability insurance, and safe driving record. Ability arid willingness to travel locally and long distance in accordance with tribal transportation policy. Knowledge of the unique health concerns of Native Americans required. Human Relations Requirements: Professionalism in appearance, behav ior, and communication during contacts with clients and their families, healthcare providers, and other agencies serving Siletz Tribal Members. Professionalism is marked by appropriate office attire and behavior; courtesy and tact; and maintenance of client confidentiality at all times. Ability to build and maintain client rapport and trust through a nonjudgmental attitude, advocacy, timely follow-up to client requests, and unconditional positive regard. Maintenance of personal and professional boundaries. Therapeutic boundaries in interactions with clientele are necessary to maintain professionalism and to ensure proper utilization of community health staff. Ability to exercise good judgment in situations significantly impacting client and/or own safety and well-being. Responsibilities: Reduce barriers to Tribal members receiving health services;: This includes 1) serving as ljaison and/or referral source between clientele and relevant tribal programs, healthcare providers, and county, state, and federal agencies; 2) providing advocacy for client as needed; and 3) providing or arranging transportation in accordance with tribal transportation policy. Provide health information and activities to the Tribal membership in local service area through monthly newsletter submissions, quarterly health promotion activities, and periodic health screenings.
