Tribal Chairman
National Congress of A m erican Indians called a
m eeting for tribal leaders that w as held in.
Washington, D.Ç. The tribes were updated ôn
issues that could possibly be before Congress
this year. Just a few of the issues left over froin
the la s t - . Congressional year are tribal
sovereignty, land taken into trust, gaming, and
taxation.
, I would like to make tribal members aware
that Council could possibly be m aking more
trips to W ashington, D .C ., becau se o f the
upcom ing legislation. The C ouncil is also
m aking m onetary contributions io our delegates
that are receptive to Indian issues.
The Siletz,. G rand Ronde, Cow Creek,
Coquille, and Coos tribes m et w ith Governor
Kitzhaber in January. The tribes informed the
Governor about state programs that they are
currently w orking w ith in their areas.
The Siletz Tribe spoke on the fish hatchery,
ICW, TANF, and gaming. O ur focus was on
gam ing because of no solution on the compact
negotiations. There would be a solution if we
would agree to th e Com munity Benefit Fund.
Dennis Goss, General Manager, is no longer
working for the Siletz Tribe. Thé Council let him
go on February 7,1998. M ike Kennedy, Natural
Resources M anager, is prim ary G eneral
Manager, and Sharon Edenfield, Administrative
Manager, is secondary. The position of General
M anager is currently being advertised.
I would, at this tim e, like the membership to
know that I appreciated the hard w ork that
Jessie Davis did -for-our Tribe. She w as very
dedicated in the w ork she did to get Chinook
W inds constructed. She also w às committed to
making our pow-wows a success.
M ost o f the m em bership know that Reggie
Butler, past council member, is m y spouse, and I
do know personally the dedication he had
toward the tribe w hile on Council. I think the
saddest for m e w as the degradation he went
through during this cam paign period, but
Reggie has a strong, supportive family that
stood behind him.

AD HOC CONSTITUTION COMMITTEE
MEETS MONTHLY AT AREA OFFICES

Collins, Dave Viles and Gilbert Towner thank
all who have offered their concerns and ideas,
regarding the revision of our tribal constitution.
We will be meeting on a monthly basis at our
four area offices, and ask for your continued
support and participation.

S ile tz N ew s
This is a new position w ith the Tribe. I w as on a
temporary assignment for 1997 and now I am
perm anently in this position full-tim e. The
duties of this position are to assist in the
coordination, w ith the various committees, of all
the tribal and program pow-wows that are
sponsored by the tribe. This position also seeks
outside funding for the tribal pow-wows and
coordinates the activities of the royalty.
1997 Wrap-up
The tribe's Nesika Illahee and Restoration Pow-
Wow were, a huge success. Nesika Illahee saw
huge crowds attending each session this year.
We had oVer 300 dancers and around 15 drums.
There were around 65 craft and food vendors
this year. The Restoration Pow-Wow, our social
Pow-Wow, was fun for all: This being the Tribe's
20th anniversary celebration, it had deep
meaning for all of us. This year we had 11 drums
and 25 vendors. These two events were put on
by the Pow-Wow committee w hich consisted of
Keith Taylor, Chairperson, Jessie Davis, Council
Rep., Theresa Collins, Wilma Strong, Connie
H artt, Katherine Porter, Ardeth Jobin, Kelly Ball,
and myself. A big thanks should go out to the
committee for all of their hard work, they did a
great job!!
The other pow-wows that I helped w ith were
the H eadstart M ini Restoration Pow-Wow. This
w as a lot of ’fun. The entire student body of
Siletz got involved. The Headstart staff did a
wonderful job as usual. The last pow-wow of
the year was the N ew Year's Eve Celebration,
this was put on by the Salem staff, JO M and
A/D Programs. The Salem staff and community ,
volunteers should be commended for all of their
hard work for this event. It's a well-established
celebration that keeps growing every year.
1998
Along w ith the established Pow-Wows of the
Tribe and programs there has been one more
added this year. The first-annual Spring
C om petition Pow -W ow w ill be held on
March 28 at the Chinook Winds Gaming and
Convention Center. Grand entries for this are at
12:00 and 6:00.

D ance Troupe
The Siletz D ancers, an intertribal dance
troupe, is finishing up their eighth year of doing
exhibitions. This has becom e a very positive tool
for public relations and cultural awareness for
the tribe and schools that w e attend. It has also
becom e a self-esteem and confidence builder for
the youth that travel w ith us. Their ability as
dancers and they becom e more confident w ith
big crowds w ith every exhibition that w e do.
O ur numbers have dwindled in the last couple
of years, so if anyone is interested iri traveling
w ith the group, and you don't have to be a tribal
member, give m e a call so. I can ; keep y o u
informed of th e exhibition schedule.
So get your dance o u t fits ready, winter is
almost over and the m ain, pow-wow season is
about to begin.

The 1998 Nesika Illahee Pow-Wow
is running a logo contest for this year.
The contest will run from January to the end of March.
The winner will receive a cash prize and their work
will be used for this year's pow-wow flyers.
