Performance and Technology program put on a free
performance in front of the Dye Learning Center .’The
lawn and sm all stone stage were fixed w ith chairs and
m usical equipment in preparation for the live concert
that was projected to the campus from noon to 130.
The performance was a mix of solo acoustic covers and
originals with some songs from a student comprised
group called “ The A c t” at th e end of. th e concert.
Some students playing included Haden Jones, who had
nothing but excitement in her eyes and positive words
leaving her lips when talking about the MPT program.
“ There is a really great music program at CCC and
they [students] should check it out” said Jones.
And fellow music student Raine Welterlen had some
sim ilarly encouraging w ords. W elterlen said, “ You
don’t even have to be a music major, just còm e join
our ense mble s. ” .
The event drew a nice crowd that sat and relaxed on
thè shaded stone benches that encircled the newly
grown sum m er grass that sprouted and waved in the
warm breeze. The nice summer weather was a nice a
backdrop to the warm sounds o f acoustic guitar that
began to play.
Jones opened the event with a set o f covers to make
the audience feel joyful and nostalgic. M any listening
couldn’ t help but hum , clap, and sing along to their
•favorite classics from the far and recent past.
Songs like Param ore’ s “ A in ’t It F u n ” and “ Feel
It S till” by Portugal. The Mari struck a chord w ith
the audience. Byt h er version Kings o f Leon’ s “ Use
Somebody” had thé entire front row of seats sing along,
turning the acoustic set into som ething resem bling a
choir o f melodic voices flowing across campus.
W elterlen slowed things down w ith a m ix o f sottie
m ore som ber original songs and jazzier covers on
pîario. Starting o ff w ith the bouncy beat of H all and
Oates’ “ Rich Girl” and then playing thé slower original
song, “ Say I B elong.” Welterlen kept up the energetic
atmosphere while infusing it with a more laid back tone.
Finally the group ensem ble The Act cartie up with a
more alternative selection of music to get people into
the Portland spirit, including some songs by Fleetwood
Mac. Altogether the event was a marvelous display of
m usical m astery by some of the talented students in
the MPT Program, and a wonderful outreach to the
com m unity that was a breath o f fresh as finals loom
ever closer.
The concert also served a dual purpose o f exposing
potential students to w hat some o f these m usic and
technology classes have to offer. As said by m usic
student Colin Erikson, “ That’s sort of what the purpose
o f this concert is fo r, to showcase. Everyone th a t’ s
playing here is part of MPT or part o f the program at
Clackam as, so show casing all the different kinds o f
styles o f people that have com e through here, and
showing what the MPT program itself can d o .”
Com e fall there w ill be plenty o f new classes and
opportunities for music majors and people just looking
to have fun while playing. So people can look forward
to those and more lively perform ances from these
avid up and comers as they hone their skills over the
sum m er.
