President elect says no thanks

The annual A sso ciated Student
Governm ent elections took place
last week, where a president, vice
president and amendments, to the
ASG constitu tion were voted on.
This year only one candidate,
M ichael Duncan Stevens, running
for p resid en t, actu ally made it
on the b allot. Despite th is , a few
candidates, Ashley Magana Mendez
and Brandon Orick, launched write-
in cam paigns — for p resid ent
and vice president resp ectively.
Stevens won the election 66 votes
to M endez’ s 55, yet for unknown
reasons, he declined to accept the
p o sitio n , leaving M endez as the
winner and A SG ’ s next president.
Orick, on the other hand; wrangled up
52 votes — a whopping 51 more than
he needed to win an unopposed race.
Additionally, changes to the ASG
constitution that mostly revolved
around sim ple language changes
were approved 71 votes to 9.
A d d in g the ca n d id a te v o te s
together —- even assuming nobody
voted for both president and vice
president — sums to a total of
173 votes. Clackam as Community
College has a to taT b f 6/616 fu ll
time equivalent students, meàning
approxim ately 97.4% of students
d id n ’ t vote at a ll. Though f u ll
time equivalent is not necessarily
an accurate picture of the total
num ber of students on cam pus,
i t ’ s safe to say 1 0 0 -so m eth in g
yotes is a tiny percentage of the
co lleg e ’ s population. The figu re,
97.4% of students, is o stensibly
shocking but not actually out of
the ordinary. An article from The
P rin t’ s archives dated November
4, 1976 and titled ’ 9.6..5^ A pathy’
harped on the lack of engagement
from students and the fact that such
a large percentage of;the student
body didn’t participate in the ASG
e lectio n s. The election that year
saw 126 votes from an estim ated
3,500 students on campus; So while
it doesn’ t seem like.-most care now,
i t ’ s not clear many ever have.
Congratulations to thè winners.
