transportation and how to save
m oney gettin g to where you
need to1?e. This week, it’ s the
holidays y ’all, and what better
way to showcase to your family
that you’re good on your own
by hosting your very own poor
college student Thanksgiving
(courtesy of Destitute Diaries of
course.) Here are a few tricks to
make Thanksgiving worth it for
you, your friends, your fam ily
and for your Christmas present
budget this year.
B u lk up o n v e g g i e s :
T h an ksgiv in g i$ focused on
carbs and protein w ith very
little input o f vegetables. This
y ear, go out and p urchase
store-brand frozen or canned
vegetables in bulk to make up
for the lack of protein or carbs
you can’t afford, physically and
fisca lly. W inco has d ecently
p riced fr o z e n and can n ed
vegetables for under a dollar. O f
course vegetables aren’t all that
special during the holidays,
esp ecially T h a n k sgiv in g, so
w h at y o u ’ re go in g to do is
douse them in butter untilyour
tongue forgets they’re healthy.
I suggest Imperial brand stick
margarine because it’ s cheaper
than store brand and easier to
spread and cut.
Potluck it: W hen I was little,
my great-grandm other at the
age o f 90 use to whip up the
entire T h a n k sgiv in g dinner
a ll b y herself^ M y g r e a t
ON THE COVER:
gran d m oth er also grew up
during the Great Depression
and knew how to save money
so she could afford to feed three
different families in the future
She was hardcore. Don’t be like
m y grandm a (rest in peace),
and ask your guests to bring a
dessert, small appetizer or side
dish to your Thanksgiving.
Keep it sim ple: The more
extravagance you add to your
fe ast, the more it w ill cost.
Som e p eop le w ill purchase
ham , steak or salmon for their
Thanksgiving feasts, but just
remember your student loans
you have to pay off and you’ll
be humbled very quick. Most
Thanksgiving dishes consist of
canned foods anyways - think
about greenbean casseroles!
Y ou h a ve y ou r cream o f
m u shroo m soup - can n ed;
your greenbeans - canned; your
bleached enriched noodles -
not canned but-it was 97 cents
at Winco in bulk and you just
had to buy it because y o u ’ re
such a huge fan o f D estitute
D iaries and d o n ’ t w an t to
disappoint me.
M aybe tu rk ey is n ’ t it:
D itching the centerpiece of a
Thanksgiving feast is also an
option. Make a statem ent this
year by switching birds! A few
cornish game hens give your
guests the opportunity to have
their own protein and gorge
themselves on the side dishes
you or your gu ests poured

On Tuesday, Nov. 20, the Cougar Cave received a huge
pre-Thanksgiving donation from Safeway.
hens average around $2 each
at W inco. Maybe it’s not ideal
for a b igger guest list, so go
for a store brand turkey, but
definitely cut down by having
individual hens for each person
if its a sm all guest list.
Soup kitchens: Get rid of the
stigm a o f soup kitchens! Not
everyone who goes is poor, not
everyone who goes is homeless.
You can volunteer your tim e
at the local soup kitch en on
T h an ksgiv in g because being
low income isn’t just about your
w allet, you can also becom e
low -incom e at the heart and
sou l. Enrich your heart and
soul by donating tim e, eating
a free meal with the people you
helped and possibly create a
tradition. Also, the Cougar Cave
is offering free food just before
Thanksgiving!

d e liv e r e d :
There are som e n o n p ro fit
organizations out there th at
can personally deliver a box full
of Thanksgiving goodies to your
door step. Take advantage of
this if even if you are hesitating
on getting one, you probably
do need one! Local religious
organizations or even schools
m ight offer these boxes, so be
sure to check in and see where
you can get your box of goodies.
Leftovers: O f course this is
afterward, but if you’re worried
about feeding yourself a few
days after the feast, save up
leftovers. You can eat turkey
sa n d w ich e s e v e r y d a y , or
even com bine certain foods
to create new on es. O n lin e
they have tons o f recipes for
reusing Thanksgiving leftovers
to create som ething new and
refreshing.
C o n s is te n c y
w ith
ingredients: A s m ention ed
b efo re a lo t o f d ish es fo r
Thanksgiving all have cheap
ingredients, but the important
part is to fin d the com m on
in gred ien ts in all o f th ose
dishes. You can do a lot with
those ingredients and m ake
more with what you have. Milk
can go into alm ost anything,
same with butter and bread.
The holidays can be rough,
especially i f you are on your
ow n. Som e personal advice
from me to you would be to
participate in your community;
call your fam ily and friends
and let them know that you’re
thinking about them because
no m atter how m uch m oney
you save, th ey w ill support
you. Write down a list of all the
things you are grateful for and
rem em ber th at even though
you are stuck in this hard time
fiscally, it will pay o ff and that
people are appreciative o f you.
D on ’t let your spirit be low -
incom e.
Happy Thanksgiving, y ’all.
