Here in O regon, however, the w inners have already been decided. In th e race for th e O rego n ’ s representatives in th e U .S . H ouse, there w ill be no ch an g in g o f han ds com e Jan u ary. Across all five districts found in O regon th e incum ben t representatives w on. T h e c ld s e s t o f t h e s e ra ce s w a s O r e g o n ’ s 5th C o n g re ssio n a l D istrict, w h ich in clu d es O rego n C ity . T h e ïa ce saw Kurt-Schrader, th e dem ocratic incum bent, ch allen g ed by M a rk C a lla h a n , a R ep u blican w ho h as sought election in a number of different positions around O regon and th e rest o f th e country. The voters clearly favored Schrader, th o u g h , gran tin g h im a 55 percent lead over C a lla h a n ’ s 42 percen t accordin g to results fro m th e A ssociated Press. T h e race fo r governor w as also decided, w ith Kate Brown w in n in g réélection to th e position. The race was perhaps closer than som e would have im agined, though, w ith Brown w in n in g 49.9 percent to ch allenger Knute B euhler’ s 43.8 percent. The race clearly h ighligh ted the sp lit in Oregon’s politics, w ith only three counties clearly favoring Brow n, and w ith Brown w in n in g only seven o f th e 36 counties w ith in th e state. The largest divide was found in M u ltn o m ah Co u n ty, w h ich includes Portland, and is th e state’ s m ost populous county. There, Brown w on w ith a 73.9 percent o f th e vote. O f th e five ballot m easures th at were up for a vote on election night, only one m anaged to accrue enough votes to p ass. O regon M easure 102, w h ich sought to rem ove th e req u irem en t th a t affo rd ab le h o u s in g fu n d ed by state m on ey had to be owned by th e go vernm en t, was passed by Oregon voters 56.69 percent to 43.31 p e rce n t - O f the other m easures, only one could be considered a close vote-. O regon M easure 103, w h ich sought to ban taxes on groceries, w as voted down 5738 percent to 42.62 percent. " , < B oth o f O regon’ s m ore controversial m easures were also voted dow n, inclu din g the attem pt to repeal the lon gstan d in g sanctuary state law , and th e attem pt to ban public fu n ds fro m b ein g used to fu n d abortions w ith in th e state. T hough O regon ’ s elections have settled, elsew here in th e country th e fig h t still rages on. Florida, w hich previously saw th e bitter dispute betw een G eorge W . Bush and A1 Gore in the 2000 presidential election, once again fin d s its e lf in co n flict, as a recount is called for * th e U .S . Senate race betw een G overnor Rick Scott and Democratic incum bent Bill Nelson. Several irregularities in th e race have led b o th Scott and President Donald Trump to suggest that there m ight be voter fraud taking place, specifically focusing on two o f the state’ s counties where the irregularities have been the m ost pronounced. The Florida state governor’ s race h as also found itself in a co n flic te d p o sitio n . T h o u g h h e h ad p re vio u sly conceded o n election n ig h t, Dem ocrat Andrew G illu m h a s sin ce rescin ded th e co n c e ssio n , in ste a d s ta tin g th at every vote should be counted before the decision is m ade. Due to the race fa llin g w ithin a h a lf percent split, Florida state law requires a m achine recount to be held. Several other races also continue, including the Georgia gubern atorial race, w h ich sees R ep u blican Secretary o f State B rian K em p pitted again st D em o crat Stacey A bram s. Though Kem p has already declared his victory, A b ra m s co n tin u e s to d isp u te it an d re ce n tly file d a lawsuit to stop the count from being finalized until every BROWN vote had been counted. Though Kem p currently holds a sign ifican t lead o f nearly 60,000 votes, if h e falls below th e 50 percent m argin , state law forces the election to m ove to a ru n off. In th e ru n off, only Kem p and Abram s w ould participate, w ith A bram s h op in g th a t she w ould pick up enough votes from the th ird -p arty contestants to push h er over the edge. T h ou gh th is even tu ality rem ain s u n lik ely, A b ram s has proven u n w illing to concede u n til th e bitter end. These election s, as w ell as the senate race in A rizon a, have future im plications for the 2020 Presidential race. If Republicans retain control in som e o f these battleground states, it m akes th e prospect o f reelection for President Trum p sign ifican tly m ore likely. U n til th e dust settles, th o u gh , we can only w ait and see. STAN LEE LEAVES BEHIND LEGACY OF HEROES AND VILLAINS O n Nov. 12, Stanley Martin Lieber, th e co m ic book icon popularly know n as Stan Lee, passed away. Over th e last year, Lee had been battling pneum onia and had been hospitalized earlier this year due to the condition. - A long w ith artist Jack Kirby, Lee created som e o f th e m ost iconic superheroes in history. Beginning w ith the superhero team Fantastic Four, Lee would go on to co-create the Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, the X -M en , Daredevil and Doctor Strange. N ot th e least o f h is creations is Spider-Man, a hero that would go on to become Marvel’s m ost successful superhero. In recentyears, Lee became known for his frequent cameos in the various movies based on Marvel works. From “ The Avengers” to “ V en o m /’ Lee appeared in nearly every m od em M arvel m o v ie , in clu d in g every single entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date. Throughout his life, Lee received a num ber o f awards. H e was one o f the first to receive the Inkpot Award, which sought to commemorate those who had impacted comics, animation, and science fiction positively, as well as the Life Career Award from the Saturn Awards. Though the concept o f superheroes existed before Lee, it’s hard to deny that he did not have an im m ense im p act o n th e w orld o f co m ics.
