The STEM club is hoping to captivate
and b rin g the m in d s o f stu d en ts
both young and old into the world of
Sciënce, Technology, Engineering and
M athem atics (STEM) by providing a
w elcom ing com m unity to share and
learn about STEM.
“ This [STEM] provides a community
o f lik e-m ind ed individuals who can
collaborate on fu n and educational
science activities, visit local ihdustries
and host professional guest speakers
who lecture a variety of subjects,” said
Robert Rutherford, a STEM m entor.
“ The STEM club was started two years
agó as an educational and social peer
group for those stud ents w ho are
studying in the STEM fields. ”

but not m uch coordination between
dep artm en ts,” Yannotta said. “ Two
years ago we had a very active STEM club
led by [former student Rutherford]. He
was very engaging with both students
and faculty and now a lot o f faculty
members are contributing to various
aspects o f STEM .”

shortly after we hired Eric Lee, our
fu ll - t im e E n g in e e r in s t r u c t o r ,”

workgroup and-Eric helped organize
our first STEM club ... Prior to Eric
Lee’ s hire in 2012, our engineering
program w as stru gg lin g and there
was not m uch o f a STEM presence on
cam pus. Shortly after Eric was hired,
our en gineering, m ath and science
num bers started to rise .”
It com es as no surprise th a t th is
club has put in a lot o f work to get to
where they are today. They are now
hop ing to im prove in the future to
better help serve students in a way
that w ill inspire them to get into the
field o f STEM.

For stud ents w ho are h o p in g to
join, Boettcher said, “ If there is any
speck of interest at all, if you’re like
‘hm m , maybe I should go to STEM ,’
just go. We hold it every Wednesday
at P132 there is no requirement to go
there. There is no signing up. There is
nothing. You just go in and you enjoy
it with u s.”
The STEM club meets Wednesdays
