Express your feminine power

The W om en’ s Center for Leadership aims
to encourage w om en and diversity in th e
world of business and education. To help do
so the program is extending an invitation
to any w o m en in an O regon college to
com e to th eir N ew Leadership O regon
program headquartered at Portland State
U niversity.
From June 21-28, participants w ill be
able to listen to fem ale speakers, talk and
network with people from many disciplines
and learn from successful professionals
across Oregon.
The conference brings together a diverse
range o f w om en, ages 18 to 60 from all
occupations across Oregon. It’ s open to
any w om en in college to apply no matter
where they attend.
The W CL has been hosting events like
this since their creation fifteen years ago.

Benade said in an interview that the event
is fu ll o f energy.
“ The N ew Leadership O regon is one
o f our cornerstones o f our organization
and is a six-d ay residential program that
is designed for w om en who are going to
college in Oregon,*’ Rossi said.
More than 450 women have participated
so far, and the plan is to grow in the years
to com e to offer more o f their programs
to different areas and people who want to
participate outside o f Oregon.
The W CL also hosts m any other events
fo r O re go n w o m e n , in c lu d in g a te en
sum m it th at h igh school girls run, and
focuses on issues they face.
T hey have also sponsored a speaker
series called ‘ B ig T alk’ th at is available
o n lin e and featu res p rese n tatio n s on
w o m e n ’ s issues in life and society and
m any other regularity-hosted programs
and sem inars.

Miranda Sdhnrui, who is new to Oregon,
said she is excited to hear about th e
organization and its program s. Although
she was too busy to attend, she was still
interested to hear about the event.
. “ I think it’ s very important that women
should be heard, esp ecially now , ju st
considering the clim ate,” said Sohnrui.
The 2017 New Leadership Oregon conference featured many strong female
voices coming out in support of women in business and education.

sim ilar response. She said she fe lt that
though there has been a lot o f negativity
surrounding the topic, these events could
be an oportunity to bring people together
in a positive way.
She also expressed how interested she
w as in lo o kin g up th e conference and
getting involved w ith the center and its
activities.
The last day to send in applications for
the New Leadership Oregon conference is
Feb. 21. If students are unable to attend,
or would like to participate in other ways,
the W CL’ s website lists conferences and
events. Volunteer opportunities are also
available year round for those who would
like to get involved w ith the program.
