Event heralds new building

C lackam as C o m m u n ity College kicked
o ff an event on Thursday, April 6, for the
Industrial Technical Center, which will be
built where the tennis courts are currently
located. The even t too k place under a
large w hite tent near Barlow and Randall
h alls. It housed m any people, including
locally im portant nam es, such as College
President Joanne Truesdell, Oregon City
Mayor Dan Holladay, City Com m issioner

The ITC bu ild in g w ill house labs and
classrooms for hands-on work experience
for students. A table set out under the tent
gave exam ples of w hat student’ s craft,
w h ile th e m an u factu rin g d ep artm en t
garage housed m uch o f the equipm ent
th a t w ill be m oved in to th e new ITC
building.
The m achine tools that were brought
in by partners are expensive, as high as
$250,000 to $350,000.

technology departm ent chair, stood on
stage and spoke about a short conversation
he had with someone regarding Barlow
and the m anufacturing departm ent.
“ The m achine tool program starting
in Clairm ont H all and then m oving over
here to Barlow H all, and the building was
never designed to be a m achine sh o p ,”
said M attson. “ The generation before us
came here and built this for people like me
and m y students. This building (is) now
an opportunity for us to leave that legacy
for the people who com e behind us and I
really appreciate all you supporting that. ”
Truesdell th anked the taxpayers for
th eir m on ey, statin g it w ill be used to
m ake the new facility, help with future
plans to bring businesses to train future
stu d e n ts, an d m a k in g O regon C ity ’ s
econom y flourish.
N ear th e end T ru esd ell, and m an y
others, grabbed a shovel, white hardhat
and dug dirt.
