Purrington’s Cat Lounge is th e first
“cat café” adoption center in the
Pacific N orthw est. Located in N orth
Portland on MLK Boulevard, it is th e
first of its kind to serve beer, cider,
w ine and house-m ade food.
The lounge provides a hom e-like
feel for th e cats and serves as an
alternative way for sh elter cats to
in teract w ith prospective adopters.
For th o se w ho have allergies b u t still
w ant to enjoy th e atm osphere, th ere
is a separate café area w ith windows
peering into th e lounge.
U pon walking in, custom ers will
see a to n of artw ork and gifts to
purchase as well as th e café m enu.
There is an $8 entrance fee, b ut
Purrington’s offers a stu d en t dis
count Tuesday through Friday 12-4
p.m , for h alf off regular adm ission.
The café offers a variety of drinks
and snacks including coffee, choc
olate m ilk and cookies, w ith vegan
and gluten-free options as w ell. It
serves an assortm ent of alcohol
ic beverages including half-price
“Meowmosas” all day Sundays and
a “Happy Meower” Tuesday through
Friday 5-8 p.m .
“It w as a super mellow place over
all, and I would go again,” said Na
th a n Ruiz, a visitor in th e cat lounge.
“Maybe even m ake it a regular place
to sit down and have a cup of cof
fee.”
Co-ow ner Sergio Castillo said th a t
th e lounge w as inspired from a video
he and h is wife saw of a café in Paris.
“T hat w as basically th e instigator
and th e n th e re st w as really to de
term ine if it w as a viable th in g in
th is country,” Castillo said.
Castillo com m ented on th e b est
way to describe th e cat café.
“P urrington’s fo ste rs cats,” he
said, “because th ey ’re available for
adoption, and it’s a different way
for th em to hang out and socialize
am ongst o th er cats.”
“Every cat has a unique personal
ity so th ere is a cat for every person
ality,” said Ruiz.
All of th e cats inside th e café are
available for adoption through th e
C at Adoption Team in Sherwood,
and all of th e proceeds from the
adoptions are given back to CAT in
stead of th e café itself.
According to Castillo, Purr-
ington’ s has had 238 adoptions since
they openedlast January ' " .
