Students’ poster wins big in Vegas

E n terin g a co m p etitio n is a jo u rn ey th a t n o t everyone

The W estern Association o f Crim inal Justice is affiliated
W ith th e A c a d e m y o f C r im in a l Ju s tic e S c ie n c e s an d
th e y h ave re g io n a l co n feren ces every y ear, u su ally at
d ifferen t lo ca tio n s. O n O ct. 12-14, th e co n feren ce and
p o ster co m p etitio n too k place in Las V egas.
“ Not all o f th e regional affiliation s have student poster
se ssio n aw ards,” said A lis o n B u rke, th e p re sid en t o f
th e W A C J. “ W è a re able to w in a m o n etary award fo r
o u tsta n d in g p o ste rs .”
Teresa M cC o o k , a C la ck a m a s stu d e n t, an d C h e lse a
V in cen zi, a fo rm er C C C stu d en t w ho h as m oved o n to
M arylhurst U n iversity, conducted th e ir research during
sum m er term o f 2016. They com pleted their poster titled
“ M easu rem en t o f Im p licit B ias in Stu d en ts P u rsuin g a
Law E n fo rcem en t Career. ”

IAT tests,
“ T h ey h ad to tak e th e lig h t s k in v ersu s dark sk in ,
preference for black faces over w hite faces and association
o f dangerous w eapons w ith A frica n A m e ric a n s ,” said
Ida F lip p o, a C rim in a l Ju stice instructo r a t th e co llege.
“ Those were the three th at we'identified th at we thought
w o u ld give u s th e m o s t in te re s tin g in fo rm a tio n and
relevant in form atio n fo r w h at we were trying to study. ”
A fte r M c C o o k an d V in c e n z i co m p le te d th e p o ster,
Flippo helped the girls prepare for w hat a poster session
is lik e . Several s ta ff and fa cu lty o n ca m p u s cam e over,
to lo o k at th e p o ster, asked q u estio n s an d gave th eir
feedback to th e stu d en ts.
“ I th o u g h t it w as really good. T hey did a good jo b ,”
said Sharron Furno, a C rim in al Ju stice instructor. “ They
follow ed all th e d irection s and gu id elin es to a t e e .”
T h en cam e th e W A CJ co m p etitio n . There were 11 total
poster en tries and three ju d ges.
“ W hen they first cam e in , I Was going around loo k in g,”
said M cC oo k . “ I w as nervous th e n , but by th e tim e th ey
got to th e secon d p erso n , I w as fin e . I w as lik e , th is is
a piece o f cak e. ”
A ccord in g to B urke, th e stu den ts did a o n e -o n -o n e
presen tatio n w ith th e judges, and th en th e ju d ges le ft
th e room for about 20 m in u tes to tally up th e scores.
- “ W h en th ey said ‘ Second p la c e ,’ I ’ m [gonna] tell you,
I n ever heard m y n am e. A ll I heard w as M easu rem en t
o f Im p licit and I start sc re a m in g ,” said M cC oo k. “ T h at
w as it, I start scream in g an.d Ida starts cry in g .” E
T h is w as th e fir s t fim e ’th a t a c o m m u n ity co lle g e
entered th e W A CJ co m p etitio n .
“ H avin g undergraduate students there is phenom enal
andrwe love h av in g th a t,” said B urke. “ The com petition
is fierce th o u g h . She w en t up again st m aster students
and th e person w ho w on first place w a s a P h .D . student.
So h a v in g C lack am as C o m m u n ity Co llege represent is
am azing and the fa ct th at it was good enough for second
place is p h e n o m e n a l.”
T h ere w ere o n ly aw ards fo r fir s t , secon d an d th ird
place. V in cen zi and M cC o o k received th e second place
prize, a ch eck fo r $150.

fo r m u la tin g w h a t th e y w ill s tu d y , an d are g o in g to
en ter an o th er com petition^ bu t tfyey w o n ’t know u n til
February.
