    CANDIDATES LINE UP THEIR PRIORITIES
GRAPHIC AND STORY BY SHAYLYN STRUNA
With the presidential election coming
up later this year, it’ s about time to talk
about the candidates.
In the Republican Party, there is Donald
Trump, Ted Cruz and John Kasich.
The Democrats include Hillary Clinton
and Bernie Sanders. Jill Stein is o f the
Green Party and Gary Johnson is o f the
Libertarian Party.
The Republicans tend to have a more
conservative viewpoint on many issues,
while the Democrats tend to have a more
liberal viewpoint.
Rex Howe, a student taking a political
ideologies class, said that Republicans
want to promote limited government and
liberty, w hile the Dem ocrats w ant the
governm ent more involved in decision
m aking.
To be able to vote for a president, you
need to know what you find im portant in
a leader. Some students were asked what
they find essential in a good president.
H ow e sa id , “ P o litics is th e art o f
com p rom ise; you never get w hat you
want. It’s the lesser of two ev ils.”
Howe said that m ilitary experience,
b u sin ess exp erien ce, u n d erstan d in g
m o n e ta ry and fis c a l p o lic ie s , and
understanding how the government works
is crucial.

The president of the Associated Student
Governm ent, Brent Finkbeiner, said, “ I
think the biggest problem in government
righ t now is corrup tion, I m ean , our
leaders are bought and sold. I w ant to
know that there’s somebody that’s going
to look out for the population w ithout
being bought.”
He said selfle ssn e ss is crucial in a

Surprisingly, none o f these students
mentioned anything about college. Here
is what the candidates plan to do to help
college students.
Sanders w ants to m ake colleges and
universities tuition free and wants to stop
the government from m aking money o ff
o f student loans. He plans to do this by
taxing W all Street speculators.
C lin to n w ants to m ake college more
affordable with the New College Compact.
This will work to help students not have to
borrow money for college fees, refinance
school debt at current rates and allow the
colleges them selves to be in charge o f
m aking school affordable for students.

to get rid o f the Department of Education.
Kasich’s plan to make college affordable
involves help in g h igh school students
earn more college credits in high school
to lessen the tim e in higher education.
Paym ent to colleges w ill be based on

Stein w ants to expunge student debt
and secure free tuition through all stages
o f education.
Johnson has not mentioned any plans
with higher education but does want to
get rid o f the Department of Education as
well. He believes the federal government
has no role in education.

are for and against, please see the table
below.
