STUDENT AIMS TO PREVENT HUNGER
JEANNINE LANCEY HAGGARD SERVES AN AVERAGE OF 100 HUNGRY STUDENTS PER WEEK

Jeannine Lancey Haggard has always
appreciated the value of education.
However, sh e’s always understood
that hunger is an issue that som e
people tend to forget about; college
stu d en ts can go hungry. T his is
w h y Lancey d ecided to jo in th e
A ssociated Student G overnm ent
at CCC.
Haggard originally dropped out of
the 8th grade, but later wanted to
finish education, and was originally
rejected from school. “Back in my
day if you were w ith som eone, you
cou ld n ’t go to sc h o o l,” Haggard
said. Soon, sh e would get her GED
and work towards a higher level of
education. “I desp erately w anted
to go to college, but w e didn’t have
financial aid at that tim e, so I was
never able to afford to go to school”.
A fter a w h ile, sh e settled dow n
and started a su ccessfu l daycare
center. Though her b u sin ess w as
doing pretty w ell, sh e still desired
a college education. Now, financial
aid h as becom e available for college
students.
In 2013, H aggard m o v ed to
Portland and filled out her financial
aid for C lackam as C om m u n ity
C olleg e. Her fin a n cia l aid w as
approved and she began attending
school at CCC. She had a 4.0 GPA
her first year o f sch ool, and has
rem ained on th e honor roll since
th e sta rt o f h er a tten d a n ce at
CCC. She is also a dedicated ASG
stu d en t. “I joined th e A ssociated
Student G overnm ent last spring,
and found that this was my niche,”
sh e said.
In S ep tem b er, H aggard w as
asked to h elp th e Cougar Cave
Food Bank, w here food boxes are
provided for students in need. This
soon became her passion. She has
spent much of her life hungry, and
aim s to prevent college stu d en ts
from h a vin g to go th rou gh th e
sam e process. She helps facilitate
Free Food W ed n esd a y s in th e
C om m unity C enter a t CCC. “R ight
now w e’re averaging 100 stu d e n ts
a w eek th ro u g h th a t program ; la st
w eek we had 161 students. I couldn’t
do th is w ith o u t ASG. They su p p o rt
th e C ougar Cave. T hey h e lp w ith
everything," sh e said.
Haggard and th e Cougar Cave are
now p lan n in g a m assive rum m age
sale. “W e’ll have 30 tables and live
entertainm ent. We’re trying to raise
$1,400, so w e ca n give s tu d e n ts
sp rin g b re a k celebration baskets,"
she said. A lthough all th e dry-food
goods have already been pledged for
d o nation, th e $1,400 w ill also give
stu d en ts coupons for p ro tein item s
such as chicken or tu rk ey a t local
grocery sto res fo r holiday d inners.

h u rts, and th e n give a little m ore.
All of us a t ASG believe th is, and it
drives u s.”

unable to provide any info o n w hy Mingo left
so abruptly. For stu d en ts in th e Digital Media
C o m m u n ic a tio n s p ro g ra m , w h ic h M ingo
organized, B rodnicki h a s already h ired two
new in te rn teac h ers to fill th e void.
The P rin t w as u n ab le to receive a n official
s ta te m e n t as to w hy M ingo resigned.
