    Cougars pound rival North Idaho
Cougars defeat Cardinals 39-12

Big w re stlin g rivals, C lackam as C om ­
m unity College and N orth Idaho College,
faced off Saturday night, Jan. 23.
The Cougars pounced on their northern
foes to earn a 39-12 victory.
The Cougars now have 14 w ins, th eir
b est record since Josh Rhoden has been
th e head coach.
Starting th e Cougars w ith a m atch win,
DeVaughn Sapien defeated G arrett W hite
12-4, in th e 125 w eight class.
Sapien said starting the duel w ith a win
gets th e m om entum going for th e team .
Rhoden said th e 125 w eight class is a big
m a tc h fo r seatin g in R egionals. T here
have been som e rough tim es th is year in
th a t w eight class.
“ 125 is a w eig h t w e w an ted to com e
out and make a s ta te m e n t/’ said Rhoden.
“We got th a t w in. T hat felt really good.
DeVaughn w restled really great.”
In th e 149 w eight class, Chris Garcia
q u ick ly g o t th e fa ll a g a in s t Ja re n
Sumauang.
“ I usually get a little hyped up w hen
w e’re h o m e ,” said Garcia. “ People are
w atching so 1 had to p ut on a show .”
G arcia said th e w in really h e lp s
motivate him to work harder for Regionals
and N ationals in February.
The last hom e duel before Jan. 23 was
on Dec. 4, w hich m ay have been a while
for th e team , b u t Garcia said w hen they
have a h o m e duel it ’s m agical because
everyone w restles better.
In th e 174 w e ig h t c la ss, T om m y
Brew ster defeated Alex Aguilar 6-1.
In th e 184 w eight class, Haszell W est
defeated Tim P arten 19-4.
In th e 285 w e ig h t class, B ran d o n
Johnson defeated Pat W hitcom b 7-2 .
The only m atch loss for Clackamas was
in th e 165 w eight class.
NIC’s Dajour Reece picked up th e fall
against Clackam as’ Brendan Harkey.
NIC entered the duel with three forfeits
in th e 141,157 and 197 w eight classes.
CCC’s only forfeit was in th e 133 weight
class.
“I th in k it w ent w ell,” said Sapien. “I
feel like everyone w restled really w ell
actually. It was nice. It was fun. It was a
lot of fu n .”
Since fin ish in g firs t a t th e NWCA
N ational Duels, back East in Indiana, th e
Cougars have been adjusting to their West
Coast grind.
“This was a nice tune up for our guys,”
said Rhoden about th e NIC duel. On Feb.
4, th e Cougars w ill face W arner Pacific
and Pacific University at home in the gym.
The W arner Pacific duel will sta rt at 5
p.m . followed by Pacific U niversity at 7.
