The tw o foes split th e regular season
series 2-2, and the postseason matchup
was just as intense. The Saints jum ped
o u t to an early 5-1 lead, b u t th e Cougars
claw ed th e ir w ay back into th e gam e
narrowing thè margin to just one run. But
the rally stopped there as th e Cougars
just couldn't fin d the gaps.
“ I th o u g h t w e w ere going to d o it,”
said catcher Kandacé Furlong. “ I fe lt the
m om entum and I th o u g h t w e had it in
us, b u t w e w ere ju st hitting balls rig ht to
people. W e had some good hits ju st a
little to o shallow. Honestly w e were just
hitting rig h t to people and th a t was a
big problem ; obviously you can’t get any
base runners if they're catching the ball
every single tim e. They ju st kind o f had
the edge today and we d id n ’t.”
The Saints celebrated rig ht in fro n t o f
th e Cougar fans after elim inating th e ir
rivals fo r th e second straight year.
“ It blows to get th ird and it blows to
lose to them ,” said Furlong.
Despite th e b itte r loss, players were
still proud o f the team ’s accomplishment,
especially given th e ir th o u g h ts on th e
team early in th e season.
“Well we definitely improved as a team
trem endously," said Furlong. “ I m ean I
was unsure if w e were going to make
it at th e beginning, it was pretty rocky,
b u t I’m surprised by this team. It sucks
th a t we g o t th ird place b u t honestly, I’m
proud o f this team .”
Many o f th e girls w ere visibly upset
after th e ir season came to a close. For
some, it was the end o f th e ir career as
a Cougar. Despite th e heartbreak, th e
players still fe lt a fondness for the team.
“This team is so awesome,” said Culp.
“This is one o f my favorite teams I’ve ever
played on, so it’s really sad th a t it has to
come to an end, b u t th e y’re awesome."
Edwards shared a sim ilar sentim ent
saying, “ I love th e g ro u p o f girls th a t
I played w ith and I guess I w o u ld n ’t
change a thing as bad as it is right now,”
said Edwards. “We should hold our heads
high, be p roud o f ourselves and I am
proud o f the team. We came a long way.”
