CCC tuition compares favorably
sity m ight w ant to take note. The
cost^pf tuition will go up.
Tuition at Clackamas is $84 per
credit hour. At th e large four-year
institutions, students m ay pay m ore
than double that per credit hour.
This is a large jum p for m any stu
dents’ budgets, and while many may
not be paying straight out of pocket
- taking on student loans and other
support - those costs add up.
These tuition costs don’t include

W hile alm ost every college stu
dent is concerned about money,
those transferring from Clackamas
C om m unity College to an O regon
four-year public o r private univer
fees, w hich add additional cost for
students. A private university edu
cation is also m uch m ore expensive.
A CC C student w ho transfers to
George Fox University (a private
college) will pay m ore th an 10
tim es the per credit h o u r cost of
an education according to figures
from its website.
The University o f O regon is the
only one o f the big three public uni
versities in O regon (Portland State
University, Oregon State University,
University of Oregon) to increase its
■tuition over the previous year. PSU
and OSU have proposed to reduce
tuition, if only slightly (See graph.)

cerning, w hen taking a longer view
tuition at the University o f Oregon,
for examples has gone up 841 per
cent over 30 years when adjusted for
inflation betw een 1979 an d 2009.
In 2014, tuition at th e university is
closer to 9 tim es as expensive as it
was 30-35 years ago.
The Oregon Student Association
is keen to p o in t o ut the long term
disinvestm ent in post secondary
education by th e state govern
m ent in Oregon. “W hen looking at
tuition it is im portant to look at the
trend, there h as been a disinvest
m ent. Part o f th e w ork th at we are
doing is tó reverse th at trend,” said
Daniel McCall, OSA spokesperson.
The long term disinvestm ent
in higher education has a maybe
not-so-obvious im p act o n how
m uch students are charged m fees
a n d ‘tu itio n . The CC C b oard o f
education voted n o t to raise tuition
for th e 2014-2015 school year.
The b o ard is taking advantage o f a
“tuition freeze” th at the legislature
approved for com m unity colleges
statewide. In thinking about the
next biennium after the one-tim e
tuition freeze m oney is gone, the
legislature could be just pushing
Cpste off onto the next group o f
state leaders.
T h e ap p ro ach tak in g in to
account the one-tim e m oney from
the legislature to freeze tuition is
“m ore o f a tuition binge, rather
th an a tuition freeze,” said John
W ykoff, O reg o n C o m m u n ity
College A ssociation spokesper
son. Essentially costs incurred this
year m ay be rolled into a higher
possible tuition increase the next
tim e around due to the way the leg
islature funded the “tuition freeze”.
Nonetheless, grateful-CCC stu
dents will enjoy a year w ithout
a tuition increase. Will student
enjoy the same stable cp§t structure
next year? “No,” according to Jim
Huckestein, vice president for col-
lege services. —■ •
