M uhamm ad Ali the self-proclaimed: “greatest [boxer] o f all
tim e’ was originally nam ed after his father, w ho was named after
the 19th century abolitionist and politician Cassius Marcellus Clay.
Martin Lather K ing Jr: bom Jan. 15, 1929, Atlanta, Ga.,
U.S.— died April 4 , 1968, Memphis, Tenn.) Baptist minister and
social activist w ho led the civil rights m ovement in the United
States from the mid-1950s until his death by assassination in 1968.
In Montgomery, Ala., on December 1,1955, Rosa Parks made
history by being the black w om an w ho refused to obey the driver o f
the bus w hen h e gave her the order to give up her seat on the city
bus to make room for a white passenger. H er actions sparked the
M ontgom ety Bus Boycott, and made history. H er refusal became
a lrey p art o f the modern movement for civil rights, and her actions
sparked further action and set an example.
T h e Little Rock N ine was a group o f African-American
students w ho were enrolled in Little Rock Central High School
in 1957. T h e ensuing Little Rock Crisis, in which the students
were initially prevented from entering the racially segregated school
by Arkansas Governor Orval Eaubus, and then attended after the
intervention o f President Eisenhower, is considered to be one o f
the m ost im portant events in the African-American O vil Rights
Movement. O n their first day o f school, troops from the Arkansas
National Guard would not let them enter the school and they were
followed by mobs making threats to lynch.
