College Gators in the quarterfinals of the NWAACC
womens soccer playoffe. If there was one word that
could define the match it would be defense. It was
defense that kept both teams in the game and defense
that lead to the Cougars 1-0 victory in double over
time. Clackamas has punched their ticket to next
weekends final four in Tukwila, Wash.
T he frigid wind stung as it whipped the cold,
relendess rain across the lit field o f Pioneer Stadium.
T he girls on the field had a'serious, nearly somber
m ood as they warmed up for the next step in the hunt
for the womens soccer championship tide. Both teams
took the field and Clackamas kicked off. T he batde
had begun.
T he Cougars (11-5-1), clinched the Southern
Region with several games remaining in the regular
season and had the advantage o f the hom e field as
well as first possession o f the ball, but that possession
didn’t last long as both teams fought to advance to the
semifinals.

T he game went back and forth for die majority of
the first half without any real scoring chances by either
team, as both defenses stepped up arid protected the
goal at all costs. T he defense was such that any one
goal would be a commanding lead. T he first chance
at that lead came in the31st minute when the Gators |
lined up and took a shot that hit the crossbar o f the
Clackamas goal.
Clackamas answered back in the 39th minUte with
a shot on goal but missed just wide o f the left post.
T he game remained offensively uneventful for the rest
o f the first half with a few wild shots here and there
but to no avail.
T he second half began with determination you
could see in each team. They could envision a victory
and a trip to the semifinals in their grasp or post-season
ending defeat. Both teams came back out m uch more
physical as well as more driven to score. T he offense
took a drastic leap as the girls made m ore o f an effort
to attack but the defense still stood strong. T he final
whistle blew with the teams tied 0-0 aftef 90 minutes,
sending the game into sudden victory overtime.
