The baseball team current ly has a 9-5 record in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges South Region, good enough for sec ond place. The Cougars are a game back of Mt. Hood for the lead and a game ahead of third place Chemeketa. Currently the Cougars post a 14-13 overall record in the NWAACC. That puts them in 15 of 27 schools but there are still many games to be played. When asked what could be improved to produce more wins, freshman catcher Chase Sterett said, “We just need to continue to make plays and not to give up.” Some of Sterett’s teammates have other opinions. Nick Olney, freshman first basemen out of Sunset High School, said, “I think our pitching and our clutch hitting need to improve more for us to win more games.” Taylor Hill, arguably the best pitcher on the team, leads the team with four wins and nine appearances. Hill also sports a 1.83 earned run aver age in 44 innings. u We just need to continue to make plays and not to give up. Chase Sterett Freshman catcher Clackamas has had a num ber of big wins so far this sea son and hopes for bigger ones as the season continues. “Our biggest win was the sweep of Linn-Benton,” said Rayce Belmont, sophomore outfielder. Belmont leads the team in a number of offensive categories including runs bat ted in. Olney has a different opinion. “Our biggest wins in my opinion were against Chemeketa and Mt. Hood,” said Olney. Both games were big victories because they are in the top three in the South Region. Clackamas has made many improvements to stay at the top of the region. To make the improvements, the team as a whole and as individuals need to improve. “Sergio Cruz has made a big improvement during the season,” said Sterett, when asked who the most improved was during the season so far. Cruz is a freshman outfielder. “Beau Day is the best improved, I think,” said Olney about the team’s freshman catcher and first basemen. The team has had a number of impressive victories so far this season and continues to look forward to the NWAACC tournament. However they are not underestimating their opponents in the coming weeks. The Cougars’ next game is Sat May 8 at home.
