Captioner helps hearing-impair
By John Hurlburt
Co-Editor In Chief
Super typist Bece Kidder
talks about her unique job
her car and an intimate
relation with stickers
What do you do?
I’m what’s called a real-time captioner. I
go to students who are either hard of hearing
or deaf. I go to their classes and write what the
teacher’s saying and then it comes up on the
screen translated into English. It’s kind of like
broadcast captioning on television.
Is that any different than a stenogra
pher?
- No, it’s the same.
It’s a unique enough job. I’ve never seen
anyone doing that in a class.
Yeah, it’s pretty unique.
How’d you get into this field?
I’ve been working for a lot of food service,
which I didn’t mind. Then I switched to retail
and I thought I was going to kill myself, or
thought, “Am I some sort of sadist?”
I started researching jobs, and I just hap
pened to come upon this job. It’s fete, I guess.
Do you enjoy it?

(emphatically) Oh yeah, I like it a lot
What aspects of it do you like?
I like that it’s different everyday. And some
of the classes are very interesting. It’s kind of
like going to school for free. I also like helping
the students.
It is a unique job and that shows some
thing about you. What type of person would
you describe yourself as?
I’m a very creative person, and I have a lot
ofhobbies.
I saw you driving out of the parking lot
and noticed the whole back of your car was
covered in bumper stickers. What’s with the
bumper stickers?
I don’t know I just started sticking stickers on
my car. If somebody gives me stickers, I’ll put ’
them on my car. That’s just something I came
up with. Not to pay for the bumper stickers.
I’ve always wanted an art car and so it’s kind
of a lame attempt at an art car.
I wanted to put “On the Road,” the book,
on my car and I had all of these letter stickers.
I started writing each sentence out with these
letter stickers. It takes a very long time and also
the stickers don’t really stay. Then I thought I’d
just re-paste “On the Road” on my car, like find
an old copy somewhere.
Is Jack Kerouac one of your favorite
authors?
I like him. He’s up there.
Who’s your favorite would you say?
I read a lot and it’s quite varied so I don’t
know. I actually like a lot of zines. I like Aaron’s
“Cometbus.” It’s a really good zine that’s been
around since the eighties. He’s written a lot of
stuff.
What’s your favorite sticker?
Oooh I really like the “garbage is beautiful”
sticker, you probably didn’t see it It’s on the
side and it’s really big.
I like the “I heart lefties” one as well. I’ve
never actually dated anyone who’s a left-handed
person but I just like it because it could be left
handed people or left-wing people or I don’t
know leftovers? It’s ambiguous I feel.

Super Torta serves students super deal on super fo
By Mark Foster
Sports Editor
As I walked in, I immediate
ly knew I was in for something
special. The smells of sizzling
pork and steak filled the entire
restaurant. Super Torta is one
of the best, quick stop in-and-
out Mexican restaurants in
Portland.
It may not look like much,
but what does it matter as long
as the food is good. And let me
tell you, the food is very good.
I ordered a pork torta, a carne
asada taco, and a chile relleno.
First, the torta. Onions, let
tuce, tomatoes, avocado, butter,
mayonnaise, beans and pork
all stuffed in a fresh Mexican
telera bread roll. One word:
delicious. Now I’m not a big
fan of tomatoes so I had to sub
stitute jalapenos for tomatoes.
Aside from that fact, there is
nothing else I would do to this
sandwich. The way everything
came together with each bite
was simply mind blowing. The
pork mixing with the avocado
and the avocado mixing with
the beans, at that moment I was
on cloud nine.
It was like the time I saw
my first Playboy, the only
reaction I could muster up,
“Woahhhh.”
It was that good.
I finished the torta like it
was nothing, looked in to my
brown paper bag and pulled
out this huge soft shell taco
wrapped in wax paper. My first
though was, “Did they give me
a burrito instead of the taco?”
When I opened it up I real
ized, no this is not a burrito,
it’s just a huge taco. Typically,
most Mexican restaurants will
sprinkle some meat on there
then load on the pico de gallo
to make it look like more
than what it really is.
First bite, first thought,
“How did I not discover
Super Torta sooner?” My
taste buds were dancing like
