The Clackamas Print
The recent budget cuts have
affected more than just the
recent class cuts. The word
was that the track was in unsafe
condition, but the truth is the
track just does not meet typical
college athletic standards.
“(The track) hasn’t been
deemed unsafe,” Jim Martineau,
the college’s athletic director
said.
The track itself is not unsafe,
rather the athletic department
lacks the funds required to
repair the track.
“Our team still practices on
it,” Martineau said when asked
about the track.
The track is still in use, but
it is not used for track and field
events.
“We’re hoping to include
it in the next bond measure,”
Martineau said when asked
what plans there were for the
track and what funds there
might be available for repair
ing it.
The track may not be up to
college athletic standards, but
that may not be a bad thing,
as the meets are being held at
Oregon City High School. The
perk of holding the events at a
different venue is Oregon City
High School has artificial turf
and the larger venue means an
increase in attendance.
“We did make money,”
Keoni McHone, track and field
head coach, said when asked if
the change of venue hurt funds.

Because of budget cuts, some victims are allowed to go into
disrepair, such as the track field.
“We’re much better off.”
It appears the lack of a home
track is not detrimental and per
haps the only thing that needs to
be done is repair the track. But,
it seems that holding the events
at a different location isn’t bad
nor is it hurting the track and
field department. Even with
the track in need of repair, it
does not seem to affect the
track and field department in
any way that decreases their
ability to compete.
