Over the weekend the track team participated in
the Willamette Mini Meet at Willamette University
in Salem.
“It was a low-key meet,” Coach Keoni McHone
said. “We just loaded up the teams to see the athletes’
strengths.”
The men’s team had good performances from Quint
Baxter, Chris Dilly, Kenjamine Jackson and Mike
Simmons.
Coming off a hamstring injury, Kenjamine Jackson
took first place in the men’s 100 meter dash with a
time of 10:91. Dilly and Baxter threw very well, with
Dilly taking first place with a throw of 52.77 and
Baxter taking second with a throw of 50.14 meters.
McHone has moved Dilly, who achieved a 12-foot
personal record, to the sixth spot on the top 10 all-
time list.
“Chris and Quint have two different throwing
styles,” McHone said. “Dilly is my speedster, and
Baxter is my strength thrower.”
Mike Simmons had a big day with the javolin, tak
ing first place with a throw of 62.38 meters.
“Mike is consistent around 210 feet,” McHone said.
“He is ready to pop a big one any time.”
,
For the girls, there were strong performances from
Rachel Hemphill, Jeeni Schantin and Andria Scheese.
“The biggest thing I have liked so far out of the
women is that they are willing to step it for the benefit
of the team,” McHone said.
Hemphill zoomed, taking second place in the 100
meter dash with 12:68.
“She was a big surprise,” McHone said. “We kney
she was quick, but we didn’t expect her to make th(
top 10 in the 100 meter.”
Scheese posted a big day, taking second in the 150(®
meter run and achieving an eight second persona®
record. Scheese has been suffering from a hip flexor®
but it has not slowed her competing.
“I told her not to go, so hard,” McHone said, “bu®
she is a pretty harsh competitor.”
Jeeni Schantin had a big throw this weekend i®
javolin, taking first place and besting her persona®
record by about five feet.
“She is ready for a big one,” McHone said.
The team now looks forward to theimext challengj
this Friday at the Warner Pacific Mini Meet at th
Oregon City High School Stadium.
