Sculptors’ art adorning campus

The sculptor and painter
Michelangelo once said he saw the
angel in a block of marble, and carved
until he set it free.
The sculptures cropping up on
campus recently sometimes look
more like the artists are trying to
put the angel back in, with varying
success. They are part of the fifth
Outdoor Sculpture Exposition that
opened last Monday and will run
through Sat, July 7.
Rick True, one of the college’s art
instructors and the organizer of the
event, has gathered a wide range of
artists to the campus.
“I like to try new people,” he
said. “I always invite the solid ones
that I know will bring good work ...
from the Eugene through Seattle area.
Sometimes I’m a little surprised by
what they bring.”
The pieces range in size. One tow
ers above students in the grass lot of
the courtyard outside Barlow, and
other smaller sculptures are hidden up
in the branches of trees between the
Art Center and the Bookstore.
“You have to find them,” said
True, as he pointed out one sculpture
hanging far above in a tree near the
Bookstore.
There will be an artists’ recep
tion on May 19 from noon to 3 p.m.
This will lead into the college’s 40th
Anniversary Celebration.
“It will be kind oflike a festival out
here,” said True.
While the expo itself only lasts
through July 7, True hopes to keep a
few of the pieces here at the campus,
but no final decisions have been made
yet

Kate Simmons, Mike Suri, David
Thompson, Rick True, Julian Voss-
Andreae and Roger Williams.
