son un orgullo y un obse
de la naturaleza, son
les especiales, fuertes y
a vez sensibles que dem-
stran su ternura cuando
nen que amar y su rabia

os que aman.
Ellas ríen cuando quieren
■tar, cantan cuando quieren
llorar, lloran cuando están
felices y ríen cuando están
nerviosas. Luchan por lo que
quieren. No toman un “no”
por respuesta cuando creen
que hay una mejor solución.
Andan sin zapatos nuevos
para que sus hijos los puedan
tener. Van al medico con
una amiga asustada. Aman
incondicionalmente. Lloran
cuando sus niños sobresalen
y animan a sus amigos a que
lo hagan. Son felices cuando
se enteran de un nacimiento
o un nuevo matrimonio, y se
les rompe el corazón cuando
muere un amigo.
Sufren con la perdida de
un miembro de la familia,
aunque son fuertes cuando
creen haber perdido la fuer
za. Saben que un beso y
un abrazo pueden curar un
corazón herido. Las mujeres
vienen de todos los tamaños,
colores y formas.
Ellas pueden manejar,
volar, caminar, correr, escri
bir, o podrían hacer lo quesea
por la persona a la que aman
y así demostrarle cuanto
les importa. ¡El corazón de
una mujer es lo que hace al
mundo girar!
Las mujeres hacen más
que sólo dar a luz. Traen
alegría y esperanza. Ellas
brindan
compasión
e
ideales.
Dan apoyo moral a sus
familiares y amigos, Las
mujeres tienen mucho que
decir y mucho que dar. Y
si se trata de actuar, ellas
lo -aran, así tengan que suf
rir, ellas lucharan, así ten
gan que llorar, lo aceptaran,
con tal de brindarle a sus
hijos lo mejor de ellas y
criar hombres buenos para
la sociedad.

Revolution, IWD was cel
ebrated on March 8. The
date finally became official
in 1921.
In the 1960s feminism
brought a renewed interest
to the holiday that celebrat
ed working women. IWD
was a ready-made holiday
for honoring and celebrat
ing women’s lives and
through the feminist
movement it was
revived throughout
the world.
The
National
Women’s History
Proj ect proposed the
idea of a National
Women’s
History
Weekin 1981. It was
such a success that in
1987 it was expanded
to all of March for
National
Women’s
History Month.
This year, on March
6, PIWD will acknowl
edge and celebrate
the diverse history
of women and their
struggle for free-
» dom and respect. The
event will provide
the opportunity for
women and commu
nity to come together
to share interests and
talents in a respect
ful, inclusive and fun
environment.

Portland
International
Women’s Day will bring
together women from all walks
of life to celebrate and honor
the struggles that women have
faced over the years.
Although the entire month
of March is Women’s History
Month, the event will take
place on March 6 from 10
a.m. to 4 p.m. It will be held
at PSU’s Smith Student Union
Ballroom and will feature a
lineup of female entertainers.
There will also be a variety
of women-owned or operated
businesses present, as well as
organizations that focus on
women.
The day will include educa
tional workshops designed by
women for women, a poetry
slam, and a women’s health
fair. There will also be poetry,
writing and art exhibits.
This will be the 30th annual
PIWD though the history of
National Women’s Day goes
back to its inception more
than 80 years ago.
The holiday began in 1908,
when the U.S. Socialist Party
first appointed a Women’s
National Committee to
Campaign for the
Suffrage.
At that point

On March 8,
1908 a mass
meeting was held
on women’s
rights-
flfa.
The next Mfl
year it was
decided
that
the
last Sunday
in February
would be desig
nated National Women’s Day.
In May of 1910, after
two years of mass meetings
and marches, the National
Congress of the Socialist Party
and the Women’s National
Commission recommended
that the day be expanded to
an international holiday.
That August the proposal
was unanimously passed in the
General International Socialist
Congress and International
Women’s Day was born.
However a specific day had
never been set and until 1917
IWD was being celebrated on
different days throughout the
world.
Then in Russia, in 1917,
there was a huge march in
which thousands of women
left homes and factories to
protest food shortages, high
prices, the world war and the
suffering they were enduring.
That protest created the last
push of a revolution and with
in a week the Czar stepped
down.
